We all know how Michael Oren renounced his U.S. citizenship to become Israel's ambassador to the United States. Now, a former member of the Italian Parliament an Italian born in Florence is doing the same thing.

Her son a member of the Italian intelligence services will probably lose his job and the Italian Jewish community is justifiably angry. As is her son, an Italian patriot.

Jews have been Italian prime ministers, have been Ministers of War and have held high military positions, being the most integrated Jews in the world. Jews fought with Garibaldi and were Italian patriots, only the sad period of Fascism did Jews face discrimination after the establishment of the Italian state. But even so, only after Italy surrendered to the allies and the Germans began their occupation were Jews under threat, and just a few were taken by the Germans. Most were protected by normal Italian citizens and the Church.

Israel’s new Rome envoy raises concerns among Italian Jews

"Nowhere in Jewish history, perhaps not even in the United States, have Jewish citizens displayed the type of military ardor evident in Italian Jewry. In no other country have so many Jews achieved martial prestige, become commanding generals, or served in the capacity of Minister of War or Chief of Naval Intelligence. Unfortunately, the attitude that many scholars have maintained towards the history of Italian Jewry has resulted in the achievements of this society being lost in obscurity. I feel that this fact renders a great injustice to Italian Jewish history in general, and incongruously discounts those Italian Jews whose belief in liberty, equality and brotherhood prompted them to offer their lives in exchange for the romantic ideal of a unified and democratic Italian Nation."
