Hundreds of D.C. murders committed by “youths” who received lenient sentences - Hot Air

"The violent crime rate in the District of Columbia is a subject which doesn’t receive as much attention as some other spots like Chicago and Baltimore, but it’s just as serious in many ways. The local news section of the Washington Post has an excellent multi-part series which is delving into the numbers and complicating factors that are plaguing the area. In the installment I’m reading today they examine the history of a law known as the “Youth Act” which seems to be doing more harm than good. Originally designed to give judges more leeway in the sentencing of young offenders, offering a chance at rehabilitation rather than a life behind bars, it seems to be resulting in a revolving door of younger criminals who graduate from minor offenses to everything up to and including murder."

"Hundreds of criminals sentenced by D.C. judges under an obscure local law crafted to give second chances to young adult offenders have gone on to rob, rape or kill residents of the nation’s capital.

The original intent of the law was to rehabilitate inexperienced criminals under the age of 22. The District’s Youth Rehabilitation Act allows for shorter sentences for some crimes and an opportunity for offenders to emerge with no criminal record. But a Washington Post investigation has found a pattern of violent offenders returning rapidly to the streets and committing more crimes. Hundreds have been sentenced under the act multiple times."

Depends on the youth.

How about giving the youth a good education and jobs as well as decriminalizing petty things like marijuana instead.

Yes the far left did such a good job of that and they still commit murder!

Maybe if you far left drones were focused on creating jobs for the youth instead of which bathroom they could use, you would be in a much better position today!

Thats a huge start. How many lives were wrecked over an oz of weed and a good 'ol Chong glass pipe? But it still depends on the youth. Some are just lost with no hope.

And how much hope do you expect when born into poverty with no opportunity while a few percent are multimillionaires, never going to jail because they are rich enough to beat the justice system.

This leniency program is applied only to violent offenders

These "youth" cannot be helped. Put them in a lock down compound somewhere like Siberia and give them something productive to do.

And that right there, blaming people who made RIGHT choices is the other half of the problem. Rich folks dont force people to commit crimes. In the end the kids did do what they did to end up where they are.

You seem to have no concept as to how the differential gap between the rich and poor harms society.

To get a good education you have to get rid of democrat control of public education....for jobs...you need to get rid of democrat control of these cities....

Lock up violent criminals...let the pot heads go.

You don't understand how a real economy works. Lower taxes, less government and you have economic mobility........the democrat love of tax, borrow and spend creates the very things you are complaining about.
