Is austerity a good idea now? Only if you're blind...

Congress steering US economy toward a 'fiscal cliff'
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke calls it the “fiscal cliff.” It might be better thought of as the next economic Armageddon.

Unless Congress acts to soften the blow, economists are warning that a looming year-end collision of massive, “automatic” cuts in federal spending and the expiration of sweeping Bush-era tax cuts could crush an already weak U.S. economic recovery.

And unlike the central bank’s response to the Panic of 2008, the Fed would be powerless to offset the catastrophic impact on the economy and financial markets.

"There is absolutely no chance that the Federal Reserve would be able to have the ability whatsoever to offset that effect on the economy," Bernanke told reporters Wednesday, following a two-day meeting of the Fed's policy-making committee.

The risk of a potential economic train wreck stems from a series of contentious political decisions that Congress has been ducking for years, postponing a long list of tough choices until the end of the year, until after the national elections.

Now, unless a compromise is reached, sharp cuts in federal spending will remove hundreds of billions of dollars from the U.S. economy, virtually overnight. At the same time, American consumers will see a massive increase in taxes that will sharply curb their spending power, taking another big bite out of the economy.

Britain in double-dip recession: the ONS rains on the UK's austerity parade
Wednesday was not expected to be a throwback to the summer of 1975. But that it was happened when the Office for National Statistics released its GDP figures for the first quarter of the year, confirming that the economy had slumped back into recession.
It came as a surprise - the ONS had been predicted to report that the economy grew 0.1pc to the end of March. But then Britain has grown accustomed to bad economic news over the past four years.
The more worrying news was the data showed broad-based weakness across the whole economy, with few highlights. Construction output tumbled, British industry shrank, while the powerhouse of Britain's economy, the services sector, barely grew at all. And no one is expecting a meaningful recovery any time soon.
"Fiscal austerity, private sector debt reduction, European sovereign uncertainty and sticky inflation all present challenges to the recovery," said George Buckley, economist at Deutsche Bank.

Will U.K. recession feed austerity backlash?
The U.K.’s slide into its second recession in three years has cast doubts on the effectiveness of austerity plans – well, at least among commentators who had already challenged the effectiveness of such plans. Already, there is a growing backlash to austerity measures in places like France, the Netherlands and Spain, mostly because a large number of people don’t like the pain associated with big cuts to government spending.

I want to know how anyone can say that in tough times, when your mired in debt, the answer is to go even further into debt. Do these people conduct their personal affairs in this manner?

No, who can understand their insanity.

First you said we experienced "austerity and spending cuts". I asked for a link but you've provided no evidence whatsoever. Again, show us that the government is spending less.

Now you imply there are half a million fewer government jobs. Again, link?

According to the Census bureau, there were 3,007,938 full time federal employees in 2010 and 2,823,777 in 2009. That sure seems like more employees. But again, you said we've cut spending. This I'd like to see. So, how's that link coming along?

the economic problem lately, is: Following stimuli that ran out in 2010 but did avert a full blown second pub great depression, conservative fear mongering about the big "debt crisis", "common sense", and their mythic ability of "jobs, jobs, jobs" brought conservative electoral gains- austerity and spending cuts, and double dip recesions and fears, especially in ireland, greece, spain, the uk, and the usa now. And yes, the resemblances all over are real, and you can learn from them...

How 'bout some real jobs bills, party of no!- the french may help all of us out of this. Sweden has the most successful recovery, dittoheads, so cut the crappe about eu socialists- which you also don't understand lol.

The Republicans are claiming they'll get us out of debt with an economic plan that will demand sacrifice from virtually everyone...

...except the Rich. Instead, the Rich get substantial benefits from the GOP plans.

WTF?

Do the Democrats have a plan that will not get us further into debt? I'd like to see that.

really, substantial benefits? How so?

The 550k+ gov't jobs cut ARE MAINLY TEACHERS, FIREMEN, POLICE- BY pubs. I'm against it- we should cut the debt and deficit AFTER the recovery. The 4.1 trillion over ten years by Obama was twice what Pubs could handle.

This mess was caused by Pubs. People who listen to them are whacked...
