They are both out for the benefit of their membership.
With some corruption thrown in.
One is a political union, the other a labor union. Not the same.
No not the same but more similar than most think in their effect.

The unions are not out for the benefit of its members. Unions are out for dues.
You can loosely say a political party's are for the benefit of its membership. Political parties do not DEMAND that you join or pay dues.
Then again, Corporations do DEMAND you join the good ol' boy clubs & pay your dues when asked. I have never seen so many golfers in mah whole life.
Corporations do NOT demand that you join a golf club. Smart executives know its not about the golfing but the deals made on the greens. NOT joining a golf club would make you a DUMB executive. Joining one is all voluntary.

I was threatened by corporate management for not joining / contributing to a PAC.
Not joining what you are directed to by management can end your career.

yes, and not joining a political party, or quitting the party can easily end a political career also.
You bring up an interesting point: There are similarities between unions and parties. Both are out for power. Both look out for the interests of their members. Both are necessary for the individual to have any power: The union for the worker and the party for the politician.
We could easily do without political parties. Without unions, the workers of this nation would have no voice at all.

Not even.
Every western nation on earth has a labor political party except the US. And the US stands alone in not securing political power for labor.
Labor unions in the US are ineffectual because the law forbids solidarity strikes, the main tool of unions.
And whatever gains unions made were deeply corroded by globalization, NAFTA, CAFTA, and offshoring.
A labor party would have survived all of that easily. Still maintaining a deciding body of clout in US elections.
If there had been a labor party in the US since 1945 no other political party could have seated a presidential candidate without support from the labor party.

yes unions are dying out in the USA and are now a very insignificant power. And yet some fear them and blame for their problems. Why? think about it, who stands to gain by blaming unions for their problems?

Who cares? Your thread premise equated unions with parties and the labor movement's critical mistake in the US was to foster labor unions not labor parties.
Had a Labor party received as much support as unions have we would not have a great recession, nor a Wall Street sector too big to fail, nor a democrat/republican machine who serves the banks and the corps first and foremost. There would have been no bailouts and no stimulus. And the SS trust fund would not have been raided of $trillions over the last 30 years.
As I stated in another post the democratic party used to be pretty much a labor party. they have been bought out by corporate interests though.
I said essientially.
Can someone more intelligent than Revere and T comment please?
And let me know if I am too far off base with this trian of thought?

I doubt there are two more smarter in this group at the U.S.M.B.
