Irony report: Was CNN 'tea-bagged'?

In a year when America's tea party activists have been surging, cable news networks that slam the grassroots movement have been dying in the ratings. Is it merely coincidence?

As widely reported, 2010's first quarter ratings for cable news networks were released earlier this month. Compared to the numbers in 2009, Fox News Channel, frequently reported as a favorite of the tea partiers, actually gained 3 percent over last year's numbers, but MSNBC, whose left-leaning commentary has been far more critical of the movement, has dropped 15 percent of its audience. Even more startling, however, is the ratings freefall of the former news giant CNN, whose viewing audience has been sliced by 39 percent.

CNN's top show, "Larry King Live," has been a microcosm of the ratings fall, losing more than half of its viewers when comparing March of 2009 to March of 2010. Fellow CNN host Anderson Cooper has lost 42 percent over the last year.

By comparison, Fox News Channel has had its best year to date: Greta Van Susteren's show was up 25 percent from the first quarter of 2009, Bill O'Reilly's show was up 28 percent and Glenn Beck has added 50 percent since last year at this time. The top 13 highest-rated cable news shows are all on the Fox News Channel, topped by "The O'Reilly Factor," with 3.644 million viewers.

The left media continue to crash and burn. The stats tell it all. We're taking back America!

And a big welcome to the board.

If you don't mind, let me piggy-back on your post simply to add a note about Fox, as the very mention makes our left wing colleagues foam at the mouth:

March 30, 2010

Just-released ratings for the first quarter of 2010 show that CNN is in a precipitous free-fall, its prime-time hosts losing half their audience. Larry King, the septuagenarian who has been hosting a CNN show for 25 years, dropped from 1.34 million viewers for the first quarter of 2009 to 771,000 for the same period this year.
True, last year was all the hoopla over the inauguration of a new president. But this year saw plenty of action too--the earthquake in Haiti, the epic battle over healthcare overhaul. Ratings on MSNBC plunged too. Conservatives are hailing the ratings news as more evidence of a "liberal media death spiral."
Meanwhile Fox News, which broke records last year, continues to grow. Greta Van Susteren's show was up 25%. Bill O'Reilly, whose show commands the biggest audience in prime time with 3.65 million viewers, was up 28%. And Glenn Beck, that conspiracy-fueling tinderbox for the Right? His audience was up 50% from last year.

[The left, however, still rules the worlds of broadcast television, newspapers, public radio and wire services (nonjournalistic cultural institutions like Hollywood and higher education are beyond the scope of this discussion). The wire services, such as the Associated Press and Bloomberg, are especially important, because they have filled much of the gap in basic news reporting as newspapers and TV network news divisions have cut back.
It is possible, now, for a conservative to opt out of the liberal media and get all his news from more or less congenial sources. But our guess is that it is not yet common practice. For now, we are inclined to discount the warnings of Budowsky and Frum. http://online.wsj.com/article/best_of_the_web_today.html]

Great. Now if we could just manage to convince CNN to return to decent journalism, not left or right, we'd have something to celebrate.

And in a related 'Pinch' story:

"Thirty-five years ago, when the Times’ Arthur “Pinch” Sulzberger Jr. was asked by his father about his preference should an American soldier run into a North Vietnamese soldier, antiwar activist “Pinch” responded, I would want to see the American get shot. It’s the other guy’s country.” 9/11 Families for a Safe & Strong America Blog Archive NY Times names WOT’s dead; tosses their heroism

You mean the "NY nee Orlando Times"? Don't forget, they moved most of their operations to Florida because they were getting crushed by NY taxes.

All the while touting the wonders of socialism, yet they won't live in it.

The narcissists are being rapidly exposed and abandoned by the vast majority of the US. If only FNC would become a broadcast network, we would see the end to the broadcast networks dominance of news. Could you imagine Katie Couric's ratings collapse if she had to go up versus FNC's version of the Evening News?

True that.

Unfortunately to the current crop of media elites balanced news would be seen as a shift to the radical right. that's how far left they've drifted. Even Mussolini would be wondering if perhaps they're going too far, but Stalin would probably consider them wonderful.

I know Chavez is jealous.
