“Change for the poor means food and jobs, not a relaxed dress code or mixed recreation…Politics in Iran is a lot more about class war than religion.” = Financial Times Editorial, June 15 2009

The link: Iranian Elections: The ‘Stolen Elections’ Hoax

Introduction

There is hardly any election, in which the White House has a significant stake, where the electoral defeat of the pro-US candidate is not denounced as illegitimate by the entire political and mass media elite. In the most recent period, the White House and its camp followers cried foul following the free (and monitored) elections in Venezuela and Gaza, while joyously fabricating an ‘electoral success’ in Lebanon despite the fact that the Hezbollah-led coalition received over 53% of the vote.

The recently concluded, June 12, 2009 elections in Iran are a classic case: The incumbent nationalist-populist President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (MA) received 63.3% of the vote (or 24.5 million votes), while the leading Western-backed liberal opposition candidate Hossein Mousavi (HM) received 34.2% or (3.2 million votes). Iran’s presidential election drew a record turnout of more than 80% of the electorate, including an unprecedented overseas vote of 234,812, in which HM won 111,792 to MA’s 78,300. The opposition led by HM did not accept their defeat and organized a series of mass demonstrations that turned violent, resulting in the burning and destruction of automobiles, banks, public building and armed confrontations with the police and other authorities. Almost the entire spectrum of Western opinion makers, including all the major electronic and print media, the major liberal, radical, libertarian and conservative web-sites, echoed the opposition’s claim of rampant election fraud.

Neo-conservatives, libertarian conservatives and Trotskyites joined the Zionists in hailing the opposition protestors as the advance guard of a democratic revolution. Democrats and Republicans condemned the incumbent regime, refused to recognize the result of the vote and praised the demonstrators’ efforts to overturn the electoral outcome. The New York Times, CNN, Washington Post, the Israeli Foreign Office and the entire leadership of the Presidents of the Major American Jewish Organizations called for harsher sanctions against Iran and announced Obama’s proposed dialogue with Iran as ‘dead in the water’.

Ah, an interesting take by Petras. I've read tons of his articles and have used him in essays and stuff, and the guy is pretty much like this in most of them- HUGE emphasis on the class factors. And the thing is that, well, he's right! Everything we're seeingg through the media is incredibly skewed, and the fact that twitter and facebook are the greatest "primary sources" shows how little we really know about what's going on. I've said before that I would not be surprised at all about Ahmedinjead actually winning, but it is the MARGIN and the RESPONSE of the opposition that makes this 2-to-1 win so unbelievable [though that is still pure speculation]. He's right, that maybe the lower class isn't coming out at all because you know... they work. They don't have time for this shit. But that still doesn't really explain the actions of the opposition. As he says, why would the opposition be risking their lives and their liberty if they have the support of not even a third of the population? It'd a shit government, they'd have ZERO political capital, they couldn't get anything done, and it'd be a total mess. WHO would fight to acquire that kind of government?? The onyl way would be to be ready to rule by brutal force, and I'm pretty sure that's not what the opposition would be able to do. And I mean, in 66% of the population, you'd expect there to be at least some signs of pro-Regime rallies, which there were but have not been reported in days now- is this because they aren't significant or because of the distortion we see through the media? We have really very little way of knowing what is REALLY happening, and that is partly the reason why the US has to keep OFF. Condemn the violence, but that's as far as it can go. If the opposition truly is insane and only has the support of 30% then it'll be crushed and nothing else will happen, but if this continues with the support of a much broader coalition of society, then it will succeed in its re-vote/re-count or whatever. We still have to wait and see what happens.

None of this addresses, how did they HAND COUNT more than 30 MILLION hand written ballots in two hours? Or even twelve?

They must be damned efficient!

Or even 6 weeks, but why should we give a shit? So far, Iran poses no military problem for the United States.

The Zionist Jews are behind the trouble in Iran

Israel hates Ahmadinejad because he won't bow down to them like all U.S. presidents do.

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall."

We are the leader of the free world, the very bastion of freedom, like it or not. We should support it everywhere it attempts to flower and is being trampled by totalitarian despots.

This is too funny.

According to many, Iran is supposedly building nukes to "wipe israel off the map", they're believed to be the nation who will apparently usher in the caliphate to eventually rule over the earth as the supreme muslim leader of the world...but they probably wouldn't go to the lengths of stealing an election to keep the so-called nutcase a-jad in power so he can eventually accomplish this awesome feat.

and how did Gilbert Gottfried win "overwhelmingly" in areas where Mousavi is very popular?....

The easy answer is he DIDN'T.

As I understand it, Mousavi was up big in exit polling. Also, the regime blocked internet sites that were being used as big rallying tools for the Mousavi campaign.

If this election doesn't have all the trademarks of "stolen", I don't know what does.

We need to find out how they managed to count all those ballots so quickly.

I guess they could have just sorted them into piles and weighed them.... Since all ballot papers weigh the same, they could get a fast and efficient count that way.

And if you believe that, I have a bridge, used, one owner for sale.

Here finally, is Obama's televised comment:

"I umm.... call into uhh... question.... Umm, the ability of any nation...... Ahh.. to count 30 million..... Ahh-votes, by hand. Ahhh-without machines or computers... in just two hours. Or even twelve. Ummm-my concern... is the physical impossibility of that...... Ahh.. unless they had about a half million...... Umm-people doing the counting.... Ahh-and started counting..... Umm... right when the polls opened. Not even our friends the Japanese..... Umm-are that efficient."

He sounds like one smart cookie!

I think the link just proved that the Socialist love Ahmadinejad. Strange bedfellows, but then again in the US the radical Islamacists and the core right wing racial extremists and the left Palestinian extremists all get along very well.

Gee, maybe it has something to do with extremism? :cuckoo:

I want to zing you for that, sort of. When the 0ne speaks, the umms and ahhhhs are a given.

I have to admit it was news to me that they did it that way when I read it this morning.

I think that is part of the reason the population seems to angry, is they didn't even bother to go through the farce of counting the votes.

Their authority rests on the moral code that is Islam. They spat on that. And the other pillar of their authority is they are the voice of the people. And they spat on that.

All they have now are the guns and the goons. As the sha found out, the guns aren't always reliable, and the goons will go with whoever is strongest.

Most of the cops look pretty young too. Does anyone know if the regular cops are part of the military and are coscript, like in the Sha's day?

I am pretty sure the cops are sick of this too. They probably don't want to be doing this, and if they get the chance, they will turn just like their fathers did.
