Hitler found out the hard way 75 years ago, and the terrain hasn't changed too much since then.

Entering Russia would become a “military nightmare” for any army, according to a rating of the hardest countries to invade compiled by Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.
Military might, the size of territory and the difficulty of terrain are among the key factors that determine the country’s defensive capability, the paper wrote.

Based on these criteria, the Swedish journalists pointed out that “whoever considers the idea of invading Russia must be prepared to handle all kinds of terrain.” The enemy would face desolate mountains, impenetrable swamps, frozen tundra, turbulent rivers, and dark forests in Russia, they said, adding that hot summers and chilling winters would also pose a challenge.

“And then we have the Russians themselves, who for thousands of years, having participated in both large-scale wars and guerrilla warfare, gained a lot of experience,” the article said.

Hitler would have won, if he didn't stop the march to Moscow for a month, splitting up his forces to invade the South faster, for the Oil fields. It is possibly the biggest military blunder of the war, and his generals tried to talk him out of this stupidity.

Hitlers mistakes with the Operation Barbarossa invasion:
1) Failing to issue winter equipment to his troops.
2) Failing to adequately prepare to convert Russian gauge railroad track to standard European gauge railroad track.
3) He focused too much on annihilating Russian troops instead of capturing Moscow, which you allude to.
4) He kept changing his focus from one primary goal to the next. First it was Moscow, then it was Kiev, then it was Moscow again, then Leningrad then Moscow again. In effect there was no primary target.
5) The Germans were not on a Total War economy until 1943, far too late for the scope of the war.

And before it kicked Hitler's ass it kicked Napoleon's ass.

I agree, thousand year old Russian guerillas would be difficult to beat.

If you could find them in a country almost twice as big as ours.

They don't move very fast.

From the article.

Switzerland and New Zealand also made it into the paper’s rankings. Despite having a rather small military of just 150,000 troops, the Swiss state remains a hard nut to crack due to it being surrounded by the Alps. It also has a lot defensive facilities, as well as bridges and roads, which could be blown up to hamper the aggressor’s advance, the article read.

Conquering New Zealand would be problematic from a logistical point of view, the authors said. The island state is located more than 2,000km from the nearest large landmass, Australia, which would make supplying the invading troops with arms and necessities “almost impossible.”

INVADING RUSSIA? Are you nuts? We share crucial outer space NASA data with Russia on the International Space Station and U.S. astronauts have to hitch a ride on Russian junk to get to the platform in space. Only a freaking left wing (Jihad?] maniac would be talking about invasion.

What are you yammering about ?
You should try reading beyond the thread title before you
criticize the author of something.

There are only a handful of countries that are impossible to invade of a decent size. Three of those are the United States, Russia and China. Geographics gets in the way of all three. Today, in order to actually invade any of those 3, it would take months or years to build up to a force large enough to span the distance and garner the resources. Meanwhile, all 3 have the resources that could be put into place to prevent the invasion. We aren't talking about a few hundred thousand deaths, we are talking about millions of deaths and a probably outcome of a draw. This is without using Strategic Nuclear weapons. Using Strategic Nuclear Weapons, it's still a draw with all sides losing and no one left invade anyone.

Who's talking about invading Russia?

Who's talking about invading Russia?
It's a hypothetical study to see who's the biggest badass on earth. Pretty self explanatory.

But what are you suggesting -- that we would just nuke them ?
My how intuitive of you.
That's quite the leap. Please explain how you got from "who's invading Russia" to "we should just nuke 'em".

It's pretty obvious .
The only time we (the U.S.) will ever get close to 'war with Russia',or China for that matter, there won't be any invasions there or here any time soon after because that's where we're at....the verge of WW3 which would be all out nuclear war in most scenarios.
