Can Bush Now Legally Invade Syria?

An interesting side-effect of the Danish cartoon affair might be the invasion of Syria by U.S. forces. As you can read in this CNN article, the Norwegian and Danish embassies in Damascus were burned down by angry mobs on Sunday.

Now, depending on the level of (passive) involvement by the Syrian regime, one could make the case this is an act of war. And since Norway and Denmark are both NATO members, Bush can invoke article V of the NATO charter that says an attack on one member state is an attack against all of them...

Presto! Legal casus belli... and no need to find further justifications in hidden WMD's, terror sponsoring or the need for 'regime change'. Just point the tanks in Baghdad to Damascus and start driving...

Far fetched? You bet. Unlikely? Probably. But would it hold up under 'international law'? Not so sure about that. But then again, that's the fun of blogging: you just make stuff up as you go and count on the commenters to flesh it out...

Invade? Depends on which context you want to use the term. "invade" as in take over and occupy the country, no. If you mean "invade" in the context of disregarding the Syrian border to run down some terrorists and take them out, then leave, I'm all for it.

I think the later, but I'm going back later to read the comments!

I have this old computer game, war in the Middle East where you play
Israel. The goal is to take over the region, take out nuclear reactors and
suppress the Arabs.

I uploaded it, its only 125 KB yep KB.

It runs on my Xp maschine so chances are it will run on yours.

All you have to do is unzip the file and then in the directory click
on the Conflict exe.

Voila, there you go little warmonger. Yes I am talking to you Kathianne. :D

Oh my! I haven't played video games for years. I used to be addicted to Super Mario and I think it was called, Tetra? Then again, that was when I was stay at home mom, with 3 under 5. I love Risk though!

It is a simple game, you loose when the Arabs either finnish your
army or develop a nuclear weapon. I just played a game after
10 minutes it ended when the Iranians nuked Iraq and the I lost
thanks to nuclear holocaust.

Deposing tyrrany is always just from a moral standpoint,
cartoon riots or no cartoon riots.

From a practical standpoint a US invasion of Syria now is
out of the question.

We are spread as thin as we need to be, and there is a
high probability that an invasion and occupation of Syria
would result in an exact replica of Iraq, and we do not
need more than one of those at a time.

Maybe if a few more embassies are burned, the EU will
awake from its torpor, and begin assuming a role in
counterterror and counter- despotism more commensurate
with its abilities.

Unfortunately, it is as likely they will react just as that Danish
nut did here in the last couple of days, finding a way to place
the ultimate blame for their troubles on the US, all the while
maintaining their time-honored practice of tut-tutting, finger-
wagging, and generally doing nothing useful.
