Words have meanings, and more importantly, have flavor, impressions that follow the words. The current debate is if the infiltrator of the Trump Campaign was an informer, or a spy. So we should look at it.

An informer is someone who goes in to do one thing, but finds something immoral, illegal, or unethical. They get the information out because it is wrong. The important part is that the Informer is there before the suspicions.

A spy. A spy goes in hoping to find the information in the first place. The offers to do other things are designed to gain access to the information the spy believes is there to be found.

Let’s say you want to get proof that a business is selling alcohol to kids. You get a job there as a bartender, so you can see first hand if the business is selling to kids. That makes you a spy. You didn’t go to get the job as a bartender and discover the illegal actions, you went to find proof of your suppositions.
