Indiana school voucher program...

Actually it's a failure.

Taking money away from public schools and giving it to right wing religious ones....

Taking money away from public schools is bad for the kids.

In what way? We already spend more money on public education than every other country in the world except for one, and just about every other first world nation surpasses us in education quality, with far less money, so clearly the status quo is not working. It's far past time we try something different.

How about everyone reserve judgment on this program for about the next five years and then see what the state of Indiana's education system is like.

I'm not religous, but what if the kids are getting better educations in those right wing religous schools as opposed to the public schools?

So, what you are saying is that you are not pro-choice?

How can public schools learn from private ones?

Private ones can kick out any student they want to.

Public schools have to teach whoever walks in the door.

So it started in practice a couple of weeks ago and is a success?

Premature exspeculation?

No one should get more in voucher dollars than they paid in in property taxes. Any thing else is capitalistic socialism.

So what excactly are these vouchers doing? Taking money from children for their education is wrong. Where did you go to school? Was it a public or private school. As far as for me i went to a public school and some of the best memories i have are from my school. Why are they trying to do this......

Private industry needs more tax dollars to grow their profits and the economy.
If a private industry spends the tax dollars technically the economy grows, if a govt entity spends it not so much technical economic growth is realized.

That right there. I totally support a voucher system as long as it falls under UScitizen's suggestion that the voucher be for no more than the inidivdual families' property tax paid.

In fact I'd go a step further and say they can't get more than the percentage of their property tax that goes to funding schools (plus any matching federal monies)

Thanks, but I misstated that a bit.

Their voucher dollars should not be any more than they paid in School taxes.
Property taxes are also used for other things, libraries, roads, etc.

And if for some reason they swap back to public schools mid school year or something they must repay the balance adjusted by days attended the private voucher school.

the matching federal school moneies should be figured in as well and treated the same way.

the federal monies are impossible to back trace to the parents taxes, etc.

its about the kids not the adults....but hey thats some of your vaunted progressive empathy right?

not quite....the system only gives up 65% of what that particular district is allotted/provided etc. per child, so in effect when a child goes 'charter' the district still gets to squander, blow or mismanage 35% of the funds for a child they no longer have....

It is however most often more than the parents paid in school taxes.
Therfore making the private school socialistic in nature.

what difference does it make? if the district gets 100 bucks from prop. taxes or Washington or its state capital and the school keeps 35% of that for a student they are no longer educating, carrying or feeding, so? the money gets spent anyway, only the district gets to keep it to blow on god knows what since they no longer have the student.

Its supposed to be about the kids, if that 65% does a better job then who cares.....
