Investigators say a southern Indiana woman shot her three children and the family dog before setting fire to her home and fatally shooting herself.

State police believe 30-year-old Amanda Bennett carried out the triple murder-suicide at the family's home in the Scott County town of Austin, shooting her three children and herself in the head.

I'm curious as to what was running through this woman's head before she decided to murder her own children and the dog. I would understand if she solely offed herself, however why kill your own blood as well? This family murder/suicide pattern is becoming more prevalent, it seems.

Women who kill their kids and then themselves typically are mentally ill, and believe that life is so horrible that they are doing their children a favor; protecting them; from whatever it is they think is out to get them.

It's not more prevalent than in the past, we just have more people and better coverage of it. It's solely a mental illness issue, and it's extreme.
