A decision on recognition, which would be the first for a Virginia tribe, is due by March 30.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs said that the significant number of Pamunkey-Pamunkey marriages and efforts to encourage them helped satisfy a criterion for federal recognition: that a predominant portion of the group comprises a distinct community and has existed as one from historical times to the present.

a tribe should never restrict the addition of new blood or it kills itself with genetic defeats that come with inbreeding....it is much harder to get recognition of tribes....

as it should be many are simply trying to get federal rights to have casinos...the eastern band of the cherokees has done well with casinos .....has this improved there living standards? not from what i saw on my last visit...i wished aim were as concerned as the known child molesters teaching in the reservation schools as they are about the names of sporting teams...
