I hope these helicopters are just as good as Russian ones.

India's cabinet has approved a $2.5bn (£1.7bn) deal to buy 37 military helicopters from the US aviation company Boeing.

The news comes ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US later this week.

India will buy 22 Apache attack helicopters and 15 Chinooks to replace ageing Soviet-era aircraft.

The purchase strengthens the status of the US as one of India's top military suppliers.

The Indian Air Force picked the Apache and Chinook helicopters over Russian competitors in 2012, but budget constraints had held back the deal until now.

The cabinet committee on security, headed by Mr Modi, gave the green light for the deal on Tuesday.

The US and Indian governments are now negotiating a series of defence collaboration projects, according to the Reuters news agency.

Mr Modi will meet US President Barack Obama on the fringes of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The Apache is a history making attack copter. It's truly first class and the Chinook broke records for lifting ability. That is just about the best ground cover and personal support plus transport money can buy. Toss in about a dozen A-10s and they can turn 50 tanks into a junk yard.

Do you need 10 A-10s (and 22 Apaches and 15 Chinooks) to neutralize 50 tanks?

The Chinook is ground support and moving personal. The A-10s could take the tanks themselves. The Apache would be best used taking out ground support like mortars and such.

I think India should get some A-10s as well. May be India and U.S. can work out some kind of licensed production deal for A-10, Apache and Chinook.

DarkFury,

Use of aircraft against tank does create an asymmetric challenge for armored strike corps. In one of the tank war theaters of India-Pakistan war in 1971, Pakistan attacked an Indian border post called Longewala with a force of 45 tanks, 1 mobile infantry brigade and 2000 regular infantry troops. The Indian border post had 120 regular infantry troops, 4 Hunters (aircraft), 1 Krishak (aircraft) and one Willy mounted M40 (recoilless rifle). At the end of the battle, Pakistan lost 34 tanks, 500 armored vehicles and 200 soldiers. India lost only 2 soldiers and 1 anti-tank gun.

That would be cool with me.
The US is talking about mothballing the A-10 which I believe would be a terrible mistake without coming up with an equal or better replacement.

Aircraft manufacturing company Boeing on Friday admitted that it has concluded more defence deals with India than the whole of the US defence industry combined in the last fifty years.

"Yes indeed! Boeing has closed more defence deals with India than whole of the US combined in the last fifty years," James McNerney, chairman of The Boeing Company, said in a webcast which was live streamed throughout the country.
