In a motion passed a few days back in the Indian Parliament the Parliament has approved the funding for the Indian Air Force to buy the U.S black Hawk copters. Also , approval was given to buy U.S Air Force F-16 and F-18 jets. India has placed a big order about 100-120 fighters. This has raised some eyebrows within Russian defence officials as India has always purchased Russian Migs and Sukhois.Anyways , it will be interesting to see how India acquires military equipment from both Russia and the U.S without upsetting either one of them. Also India and U.S will conduct counterterrorist training in the Assamese jungles and naval excercises in Hawaii. India has said that it is looking for modern choppers and copters which will make it more easier for the Army to battle jihadists in the Kashmir region where thousands have lost their lives due to militant activity.

I guess that is free enterprise. Or could it be because the Russians aren't putting out a good product anymore? All of the above aircraft that india wants are well over 20 plus years old. Even with upgraded avioncs the airframe is quite old. except the F/A-18 E/F platform which is about 6 years old roughly.

So? What's your point?

Aki, this would be good news but I cannot find any information on actual Indian purchases of either Blackhawks or F-18s. Google has nothing on this and that's surprising because it would be significant news. The sale of F-18s to India would be listed on Boeing's website, but it is not: http://boeing.com/ids/news/index.html. And the sale of Blackhawks would be noted on Sikorsky's website, but it is not: http://www.sikorsky.com/sac/Home/0,9746,CLI1_DIV69_ETI541,00.html. I did find a link that reports an IAF request for 40 additional Russian SU-30s, although it is not clear it this deal actually occurred: http://www.axisglobe.com/article.asp?article=1085. I also found a link for the sale to India of 40 used French jets: http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticleNew.asp?xfile=data/subcontinent/2006/October/subcontinent_October197.xml&section=subcontinent. Anyway, I can find no confirmation of your post. What is the source of your information?

Actually I read it in the papers. The Dubai based paper Gulf News ran a small article on it long back under their India section. Actually , its is true as you yourself I think wrote to me about india buying F-18 fighters when we were having that debate about India's place in the S.C under Global Affairs. And India needs the choppers anyways to counter the insurgents in the Kashmir Valley. Even India Times ran a page on the effectiveness of the U.S Black Hawks in Iraq. There were file pics and photos of U.S Black Hawks in action.
I tried to find the link but coouldn't get it.

I was aware that India was contemplating the purchase of 126 F-18s, which would certainly give the Indian Air Force a big edge over both Pakistan and China. But I am unaware that the deal has been signed. In fact, I would bet that it has not. A deal of that magnitude, worth many billions, would certainly be posted on Boeing's website, but it is not. There would be some news articles that we could google, but there are none. I know from previous news articles that both France and Russia are desperate for this deal. So there is a lot of competition. If it comes down to dollars and cents, then the IAF will probably continue to buy Russian jets. If the IAF has the money, then they can get qualitative superiority with the F-18s. But I think India has yet to make a final decision. The same hold true for the Blackhawks. There is no news that can be googled on that purchase either. That would be significant news for Sikorsky shareholders and would therefore appear as a news item on their website, but it does not.

If the F-18's are superior then the Mig's then the I.A.F will certainly go for them. It does have the money mind you..Spending 30 billion for superior fighter jets will go very well with New Delhi especially IF it gives us an edge over Pak and China. The news item just said that India was trying to acquire F-18's and Black Hawks as well as Kiowa's..But the deal isn't finalised yet. I just checked it out. The paper was still there in my drawing room so I glanced at it. You are right.India hasen't yet actually purchased the birds. The article also said that India might start getting the jets by 2007 or something but you never know!
