It finally hit me between my eyes--& your's too. I called my health care provider Anthem--Blue Cross Blue Shield--to get my husband & myself health insurance to reduce the upcoming Jan. 2010 premium down from the scheuled rate increase to $1114.00 per month for just the two of us. Keep in mind that we are both over 50, very healthy in fact marathon runners. We both get our yearly phyisicals each & every year & have been doing so for many years. We have a lously high deducible policy & are on 80/20 plan. And we're more physically fit & healthy that most 30 year olds.

Anyway, I listened to this basically apology from this company as to why health insurance premiums are sky-rocketing. I listened to it--& it finally hit me between te eyes.

When you can get a pill for

1. "Restless leg syndrom"--give me a freakin break
2. "When you can get a pill because you wet your pants because you cough or sneeze--give me a freakin break. Hey you're older than 45.
3. When you can take a pill because you don't think your sex life is good enough--give me a break.
4. When you can take a pill--that can make you happy-give me a break.
5. Let's not forget if you have a problem sleeping--LOL
6. Etc. etc. etc.etc.etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

The fact is that we as Human biengs have lost alot of sleep--most of us as we age will laugh, cough, or sneeze & will squirk a little urine, & let's face it over 55 years old if your man can't get it up--I'll bet ya that the woman he's been wth over the last so many years could care less anyway.--She loves him anyway.

All of these advertisments are in our face every single day, in fact many times duriing the day, along with at least 45 seconds of what the side effects that may occur if you use these drugs.----

Now add to the above, the cost of the doctor you go to too-who you may sue if they don't work, or if one of those 45 seconds of side effects happen to you & of course the tests he will use to determine your need for any of the above snake oil" of which all will be paid by your medical insurance company pays & you wonder why there medical insurance rates are through the roof for everyone?.

My Entire POINT IS: WTF---ARE ALL THESE PILLS FOR---When we have survived for centuries without them?

And no bargaining with big Pharma was allowed for the pill bill.

Yes direct selling of prescription medicines to the end user and lobbying congress has been very profitable for big pharma.

I'm reminded on something I saw on TV (before I got rid of it) on PBS. There was a special on aging. And Bill Moyers made me suddenly realize what I, at 38, am in for. He was quoted as saying:

"I don't feel like an old man! I feel like a young man who has something wrong with him!"

That one statement was an epiphany to me. My parents generation, or at least a LOT of them believe they are ENTITLED to feel like they did in their youth! That age is some sort of cruel joke that is robbing them of their rightful state of being regardless of age. They want the fountain of youth and are willing to enslave and destroy anyone who gets in the way of their quiet obscession for that lost youth.

Like a drug addict who's become tolerant to the drug, they want more and more and more and take greater risks and do stupider things till finally the whole thing crashes down. Older generations understood, age means you can't physically do what your mind desires. They had no ability then to interfere with the natural order like this generation does.

They also were not cursed with the endemic narcissism the boomers were as well. They understood you had to build and preserve the future and make the world a better place for their children and grand children and beyond.

Thanks for this post, for it crystallized more of what I was observing. I now understand better why.

The scarier point to me is that my generation (The Baby Busters/Gen X) are going to be even worse unless some catastrophe changes their way of thinking.

So, we are at the point where health care is eating up 17% of our nations income. And will eat up 22% in a very short time if nothing changes.

And you freakin' dingbats say nothing is wrong.

Japan pays 8%, covers all their citizens, has the longest lived people in the world, and a far lower infant and early childhood mortality rate than we do. In fact, Canada has a far lower infant and early childhood mortality rate than we do. And pay far less while covering all of their citizens.

But just continue to state ominious nonsense about 'socialism' and kiss the asses of the Health Insurance moguls that are shitting in your faces. It's the Republican and Conservative way.

Bovine excrement. What is wrong is government interference in the programs that exist. Creating false markets, distorting true market forces for social engineering. If they would get the hell out of the way, a lot of these problems would disappear.

THAT is the real issue. Government should regulate things like consumer protection and fraud and stuff like that. Not administer. Not pay. Let the market do it's damn job. If hospitals want to cut out insurance companies and offer their own payment plans, LET THEM! If doctors want to be paid by retainer for treatment, LET THEM! Cut out the insurance companies completely that way. Market forces solved the problem right there then.

Currently, if a doctor or hospital tries that? They're shut down for offering insurance without a license. Total bullshit as far as I'm concerned. Special interest protectionism that needs to be ended first and foremost.

If there is an area where people are being left behind encourage charitable groups to cover it.

There is no need AND no constitutional authority at the federal level for state run health care.
