Blazing Saddles wasn't really a belly laugh. It was a clever experiment by Mel Brooks to use liberal guilt as a way to force people to laugh at stuff that wasn't really that funny (laugh or you are a latent racist). The Marx brothers set the standard for humor in the 20th century and everything else including the Hope/Crosby road movies were just modern copies. The subtile slapstick and the clever dialog makes the Marx Brothers movies funny even today.
