In the richest nation in the world

To state the obvious, homelessness is a complex and intractable problem. It is caused largely by mental illness and substance abuse, but also by laziness and poor life decisions, and simple bad luck. Many good people end up out on the streets for reasons that are not their fault, not the least of which is a shortage of "affordable" housing - quite severe in some locales.

It is easy to say, "somebody" ought to do "something," or that "we spend a ton on money on [whatever], but can't provide housing for those who need it."

But "we" do not live in a socialist utopia. No government has formally assumed the responsibility to provide housing for those who need it, and certainly the U.S. Federal Government is prohibited from doing so, under the Constitution. Furthermore, we live in a society where masses of people do the least possible amount of work, hoping to exploit The System at every turn, and as quickly as some government or other entity would assume the obligation of universal housing, the need for it would explode.

What is the solution? Be specific. If you know the solution, let other people know, because it sure as hell isn't obvious.

been like that for years , i first saw that in the mid 80s and then it was mostly 'blacks' with some whites thrown in . I went down there every time i went to 'los angeles' just for the sake of curiosity . Nowadays i am GUESSING that its a lot of third worlders and i haven't been back there to check things out in the last few years Gipper .

If I knew the solution, I would have posted it in the OP.

I am as far from a socialist as you will find.

At any rate when this nation has such enormous wealth, I find this kind of mass homelessness entirely unacceptable. Particularly when we have a corrupt criminal central government spending trillions on the military industrial complex and other such assorted boondoggles.

A rough estimate of our homeless show that over 600K homeless people in the US are Vets.
Not all of them are crackheads and schizos. For a lot of them, WE caused their illness..

We did NOT cause it. A criminal warmongering ruling class caused it.

I do not believe LA is alone.

I have seen large groups of homeless in San Francisco, Chicago, and other major cities. I find it disgraceful and unacceptable.

So voting for a criminal politician makes one culpable for their actions. I think not.

50% of Americans don't vote. The others that do, get the choice between two cocksuckers. Hardly democratic.

If we cut aid from foreign countries and illegals for one year, we could get all those vets and children out of the street. Its sad and despicable.
Im not for unconstitutional actions but at LEAST we would be taking care of our own and not foreigners, terrorists and people that hate us.

Our money is better spent on foreign countries and illegals.
You anti american asshole
And new amazon warehouses and welfare disbursed through the Pentagon on no bid contracts or just straight up "lost". Lets shine a light on the right's dirty laundry welfare.

Again, that is the voters fault.
Its THEIR fault they dont vote.
Its OUR fault we let the duopoly run this country.
The Iraq war had an eighty percent approval rate among Americans. EIGHTY PERCENT

Please, spare us your partisan bullshit. We are trying to have a decent discussion.
Thanks

How is this possible? Where is the outrage? Why is there no discussion of solutions?

whats the old saying , goes something like this . You could give these people all the help , money and housing that is needed but they would soon lose or destroy what was given to them . ----------------------------------- i wouldn't mind helping out Americans but feck the third worlders .

Homelessness is not a right/left thing. Saying it is only exposes oneself as a partisan fool.

--------------------------------- aw well , at least its mostly warm with [probably] lots of feeding stations and liquor stores . Course , where are the POOP stations ??
Yes at least it is warm.

I was downtown last night, in subzero Michigan. A homeless man approached me asking for money. I told him he needed to get indoors. He said he planned to, but needed $2 to buy food at the shelter. I gave him a few bucks.

I wondered later if it is true the homeless shelter requires payment for food. How the fuck does a homeless person come up with money for food everyday? Does he have to go begging on the streets everyday?
