There is an advertisement for world vision on the page sometimes. Give a child a goat. This is one of those instances where you wonder what the folks in charge of charities are thinking.

Goats are the major thing humans do to wreck the environment. The problem with marginal economies all over is the huge number of goats, which eat the grass down to the roots and spread desserts.

I don't know exactly what the right thing to do there is. A book on intelligent farming practice might not go over well. But of all the things you could do in a place with encroaching desserts, the last thing you want is a goat

There are plenty of other options to pick from to assist those in need in third world countries. We pick one every year. As a family, we usually donate to Oxfam at this time of year. We also pick one local charity. This year, our charity is Schools on Wheels in CA. They help the children affected by homelessness by providing books etc as well as support.
