“You don’t even have to be convicted of a crime to lose your job in this constitutional republic if this body determines that your conduct as a public official is clearly out of bounds in your role,” the politician said. “Impeachment is not about punishment. Impeachment is about cleansing the office. Impeachment is about restoring honor and integrity to the office.”

That man was South Carolina’s own Lindsey Graham, then a 43-year-old, third-term Republican Congressman. The president in question was Bill Clinton.

Were Republicans right then? Is impeachment about 'cleansing the office'? Is impeachment about restoring honor and integrity to the office?

If so the House should move full speed ahead with Impeachment.

You would have to ask your fellow Trumpettes why you couldn't figure out a way to impeach our first black President.

1. Bill Clinton's behavior with an intern would have gotten ANY manager in the country fired, period. It was simply unacceptable behavior. He should have been removed. Where was the #metoo movement back then?

2. Impeachment is defined in the Constitution. The reasons for impeachment are listed also, they are "High crimes and misdemeanors". But don't worry if Trump gets impeached. The senate already signaled that they consider this "impeachment inquiry" as partisan and not criminal. Even Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz and GW professor Jonathon Turley said that the Ukraine phone call does not warrant impeachment.

I think that was enough for them. But this proceeding seems to me more about a deterrent to Trump for doing something to the nominee. It won't deter him, but I don't think there'd be enough dems willing to make the vote unless there was some actual principle beyond impeaching him to satisfy the LW nutter base.

I answered your question. it didn't happen and the office got cleaned up when Trump took it over. FINALLY! the GOP allowed the elections to take his sorry ass out. and not allow the vijay jay queen from take over.

If a quid pro quo was proven, it would be self-dealing and an abuse of public office, and that can be a crime. Just ask disgraced former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. He was convicted after calling other political figures to leverage the appointment of a new United States senator, to replace the newly elected President Obama, for his own political gain. While some of us were highly critical of that prosecution, because politicians routinely use such decisions to their own benefit, Blagojevich was found guilty and his conviction was later upheld.

The problem is that Trump is just a symptom.

The fact that he sits in that office says more about this country than an impeachment can fix.

Something is seriously broken.

and it's with those talking impeachment. we know.

The potential crime that needs to be investigated is that Hunter Biden benefited greatly by being Joe's son. Why was Hunter put on the board of Burisma at $83,000 a month? Was it payback to protect the Soros' organization from prosecution?
Why was Hunter, Kerry's step-son and Whitey Bulgers nephew's hedge-fund given $1.5b by China? What did they get in return?

You think impeaching a president because you lost in 2016 is bringing integrity back ? Lol that’s funny

Trump's call on a foreign government to dig up dirt on his political opponent would get him tossed from any other office in the United States. It was simply unacceptable behavior.
But that wasn't a crime- the House could still have impeached Clinton for it.

And I agree- this Senate is very unlikely to impeach Trump for anything. This Senate would have been cheering on Nixon and agreeing with him that the Oval Office tapes were 'fake news'.

Yep- the GOP couldn't do it in 8 years.

I love how no one is addressing the hypocrisy of the GOP's position change from the Clinton impeachment to Trump's impeachment.

I think impeaching Trump because he is both breaking crimes and has removed the honor and the integrity of the office of President is exactly what Lindsey Graham was talking about before

Well a lot of Trump supporters disagree with his divisiveness. But they agree that immigration is a problem, and most Obama voters thought our for policy was bad.

I think his election shows the elite of both parties was/is not responsive. But I don't know that I can vote for Warren or Bernie. Mayor Pete's not going to get Biden's African American voters in the South, so I still don't see his path to the nomination.

No he's not. He just wants something to point to at his rallies. A public announcement of an investigation of his opponent is all he thinks he needs to hawk all the rubes he has on his side. He couldn't careless if the accusations are true, just that there are allegations. Worked out well for him in 2016, in that all the Rubes will still swear she is as guilty as a criminal can be.

Why can't I? Or rather- why can't I agree with Turley and point out how I do agree with Turley

Trump's Ukraine transcript: Unwise words but no proof of a crime
The transcript of the call from President Trump to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is enough to make Edwin Edwards, the infamous Louisiana governor, blush. Edwards once bragged, “The only way I can lose this election is if I’m caught in bed with either a dead girl or live boy

The transcript lacks a critical element needed for impeachment, which is evidence of a quid pro quo. Trump never connects the investigation with the roughly $400 million in military aid. While he discusses the aid, he never suggests he will not send it. That does not mean a case for impeachment or criminal prosecution cannot be made. Unlike the prior impeachable offenses suggested by Democrats, this allegation of self-dealing could be both an impeachable offense and a federal crime, though neither would be easy to prove.

The quid may still be out there, but it will not be found in this transcript. The most obvious place to look is with witnesses who may have heard Trump make the linkage. The most intriguing of those possibilities would be former national security adviser John Bolton, who Trump recently fired and then maligned. Bolton reportedly was irate over the freezing of Ukrainian military aid, and he could have the knowledge and motivation to supply information. It also is reasonable for Congress to say that, with a half billion dollars on the table, it is hardly necessary to state the connection. Yet presidents often have such leverage over countries.

Congress is justified in investigating, and the transcript is not the entirety of the evidence that might show the intent or act or corruption. All this is why House Democrats still need to find the quid.

Your citation spells out what Turley says to look for and makes it very clear that the Congressional investigation is legitimate.

Thanks for sharing.
