I don't see where in the article is said he was burned alive. Is this 'creative licence' on your part? Adding a bit of drama to the tragedy?

The article said he died in an explosion. And, if it had been a fire, he probably wouldn't have 'burned alive' anyway - most victims die before they are burned - of smoke inhalation.

Call me pedantic, but it completely ruins the whole dinner!

I don't actually care whether the crime was against Muslims or any other religion. And I am not overly fond of the 'hate' crime tag. However, the CRIME itself - no matter what the religion of the victim - was an outrage. I hope the perps are caught and meet with a suitably appropriate fate.

I appreciate that you're concerned. I understand why many people take issue with the concept of "hate crimes"; it's just disturbing when a member of your ethnic or religious group is killed for no crime apart from being what they are.

YERMO • The case involving a local Muslim leader killed in a Yermo house fire still hasn’t produced any suspects and investigators are now shelving the case, according to officials from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

“We’ve pretty much exhausted all of our leads,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire.

Ali Mohammed, 51, died on June 27 while he was out visiting the Yermo property his family had recently moved out of when the building went up in flames.

Investigators from the bomb and arson unit have confirmed that the fire was human-caused and not a result of faulty equipment, Wiltshire said. At the time, several neighbors confirmed hearing a loud explosion ring out before seeing the house on fire.

But they have not been able to determine who started the fire, she said....

I think that this is the same story. The Imam was killed by fascists. The images on the wall itself tend to suggest that, and it is kind of odd that the murder/arson case closed within 6 months.

I dislike the singling out of certain groups as being somehow more important than other victims. That, and that alone, is my issue with 'hate' crimes.

Having said that, my sympathies are with the local community - both Muslim and non Muslim who are adversely affected. This type of incident increases suspicion between communities and that is a huge tragedy.

What's missing is that this may have been a murder, may have been arson gone bad, may have been some other reason for explosion.

If it was the first-hope they find the perps and prosecute to fullest extent.
