Glenn Beck's show is going to be on teachers today.
I really feel for the teachers of this nation. The majority of our teachers is outstanding, but many have complaints, as well they should.
They are being held back by unions and principles and many can't teach the way they would like to.
One of thing's I think should be brought back is strong discipline again.
I had a teacher in 6th grade who used the old ruler to the knuckles , she did it only once years before I had her class. Just the talk about it made it so that no one had to be disciplined like that again. Maybe it's old fashioned but something in the way of giving them back the power to keep their classes in line clearly needs to be done
We need to get teaching classes back to the levels that we had when we were number 3 in the world.
Socialism must be taken out, it is not working. Why in the world do we have Political ideology in the school system at all? It should not have left or right ideology period. Just plain ol teaching of each and every subject.
The system needs to be overhauled it will be interesting to hear their complaints and suggestions today.

I hope and believe that the quality of schooling in the US, overall, is going to increase tremendously over the next decade or so.

My kids go to a charter school now and it's WONDERFUL. Our district is so small and poor that we had to choose between bussing our children 20 miles away for school or opening a charter. The charter school has been wonderful for not only the kids, but for the community, who participate in the school in a way they wouldn't with a regular public school (with their strictures and requirements). The slant is "natural resources and conservation" or something like that, which is really cool because it means the kids always have school-wide, long term projects going on. They are ALWAYS raising plants, they have raised some fish (that will go into a local pond), it's just too cool for words.

Of course they are. They're both off the charts in reading and above the standard in math.

The school makes use of programs like Americorps for music; we have new teachers every couple of years and each teacher brings a different slant. My kids have taken violin and piano for 2 years. Local businesses sponsor the little kids' sports (baseball, tee ball, soccer). A local rancher heads up the school's garden program. They participate in writing and art competitions; the kids have reading partners among the people at the assisted living facility, about 2 blocks from the school.

I find it really interesting how the school interacts with the entire community to meet certain requirements. It really is the way schooling should be, I think.

Schooling will need to be reformed in coming days. I hope I can do my part to change it.

Glenn should invite the average American student of today and ask them how much they think of education and teaching? Then he should ask them what they'd like to do and why? Then maybe he'd learn something, well not him, but maybe his audience would.

Wish I had time to write the stories my wife told me just this week {every week} about parent excuses and American student's laziness. Baffling for sure, but telling of why we are growing dumber and dumber as a nation. Oh, by the way, turn on TV too if you want to understand our culture of narcissistic insanity, detective shows, and medical aliments that House can't solve. Then watch Repo shows and whatnot on TruTV for a interesting view of your fellow citizens. Abandon ship, abandon ship!

My brother, the teacher, was talking the other day about how students don't seem to understand the self-satisfaction of a job well done. They want rewards for everything they do...even normal expectations like homework. His school is holding a drawing for an Ipod JUST to get parents to get in the Whooping Cough vacination paperwork on time.....it's the frickin' law!
