I remember being young and idealistic. Sometimes they just get it right. This is one of those times.

My SIL just posted a petition about this Kony person on FB. I'd never heard of him. A quick Wiki search reveals:

h Kony (born 18 September 1964[4] in Odek, Uganda[1]) is a Ugandan guerrilla group leader, head of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), a group engaged in a violent campaign to establish theocratic government based on the Ten Commandments throughout Uganda.[1] The LRA say that God has sent spirits to communicate this mission directly to Kony.[5]

Directed by Kony, the LRA has earned a reputation for its actions against the people of several countries, including northern Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Sudan. It has abducted and forced an estimated 66,000 children to fight for them, and has also forced the internal displacement of over 2,000,000 people since its rebellion began in 1986.[6] As a result, in 2005 Kony was indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court at the Hague, but has succeeded in evading capture since.[7]

What kind of sick bastard in this guy and this LRA? They should be shot.

My daughter just told me about him about an hour ago, up until then I never heard of the bastard. maybe this is the way real people get shit done.

I just watched it, my wife has been telling me about it all day, this is why we do what we do...

He needs to go, why or how this has gone on for over 20 years is deplorable, were has the UN been, hell were have we been...

My young teenage son showed me the video yesterday in the very early stages of it starting to make the rounds. It deeply affected him.

That situation is a fucking horror show.

Too bad we don't wish to play world policeman anymore. There are some victims out there who could really use some help.

Oh hell..if we went in with guns blazing and killed the guy...THEN the UN would have showed up screaming about American militarism.
This just shows you how the UN is worthless, corrupt and couldn't care less about anything where they won't gain politically or monetarily.

Where to find the LRA is the question/

The Soft Bigotry of Kony 2012

The viral video campaign reinforces a dangerous, centuries-old idea that Africans are helpless and that idealistic Westerners must save them.

The backlash against Kony 2012, a super-popular social media campaign to raise awareness about deranged warlord Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army, has mostly focused on two things. First, the group behind it, Invisible Children, has a poor track record and shady finances; and, second, the campaign's uninformed and almost infantilizing over-simplifications are probably going to do very little beyond raise lots of money and publicity for Invisible Children. But campaigns like this one, and this one especially, can end up doing more harm than good.

[...]

But the damage of Kony 2012 is probably already done, and that damage is real. First, it's likely to actually decrease the amount of help that goes into Central Africa. The video is a joy to watch and spread because it tells Americans that by simply watching a video, and at most maybe buying a $30 "action kit" of wristbands and stickers, they have done all that's necessary; they are absolved of responsibility. How much money has Invisible Children soaked up that could have gone to actually effective campaigns or more experienced NGOs? How many people might have put their energy, which after all is finite, toward something more constructive? As Amanda Taub and Kate Cronin-Furman write, "Campaigns that focus on bracelets and social media absorb resources that could go toward more effective advocacy, and take up rhetorical space that could be used to develop more effective advocacy."

Silly americans and their propaganda.

I just saw it this morning. Oh my god..

People waking up to the situation over there all because of one man, bring that murderer to justice!

But the Invisible Children campaign may represent the next step in online activism. Previous efforts have been one-sided, with users joining forces against a common foe.

"Now you have two sides going to war in a social media campaign for the public opinion," says Kane.

In the meantime, people are becoming more critical about what they read online, especially when it comes to charitable causes.

"There's definitely a social media fatigue," says Bower. "You can't just put something out there and let it sit. People are going to challenge it."

Kony is either "no problem" or "not a US interest". Only when he kills enough to catch the attention of the West will his band be of interest.

By Invisible Children's own metrics, though, Kony2012 is already a success.

"Last week, there are millions of people who didn't know who Joseph Kony was, and today they do," says Vachon. "There's value in that."

What value it will have for the people of Uganda, however, is yet to be seen

Rush says Kony is Christian fighting Muslims:

Limbaugh earlier this month criticised President Barack Obama for targeting the group in Uganda. The US president sent US military trainers to the country to help shut down the group.
According to a transcript from his radio show, Limbaugh said: "Lord's Resistance Army are Christians. They are fighting the Muslims in Sudan. And Obama has sent troops, United States troops to remove them from the battlefield, which means kill them."
In response to his attack, Evelyn Apoko, a 22-year-old who was mutilated by the LRA 10 years ago when guerrillas snatched her from a community centre near her home in Gulu district, Uganda, has spoken of her three-year ordeal.
After the brutal treatment, where she was used as a "human mule", walking through day and night carrying things, she was flown to Texas where doctors reconstructed her jaw, removed scars and helped rebuild her face.
She escaped the LRA in 2004 and was flown to the US the following year. "Dear Mr. Limbaugh," Miss Apoko responded in a video message, "My name is Evelyn. I am a former abducted child. My heart breaks when I hear your message about the LRA."
She continues: "The LRA is not Christian," she told the talk show host. "Joseph Kony and his commanders could hardly be considered human."
The Lord's Resistance Army began waging war in northern Uganda in 1988. It stands accused of gross human rights abuses over the course of two decades.
Since 2008 Washington has provided more than £25 million in logistical support, equipment and training to "enhance counter-LRA operations" by armies in the region, a spokesman for the State Department said. A year ago, Mr Obama unveiled a plan to disarm the LRA and increase humanitarian access to affected communities.

Not in the US, thus little concern HERE.

I just watched part of the video of him on the news this morning....so terrible!!! I'm visiting my son at Ft Bragg right now, and he said we need to send in a team of SF. That's what has to happen, they'll find him. How could this go on for so many years and just now we're all hearing about it? Forget the UN...they're WORTHLESS. They only care about helping our enemies in places like Libya. I'll bet too that this Kony isn't the only one doing something like this either.....

He has been in the news enough to catch the president's eye, but not much else. I'd like to see opinions on what the US should do, if anything. UGANDA says he not a problem any longer but the US did start a war over human rights abuses. Or at least that was one of the stated reasons. The UN called for Kony's arrest almost two years ago. We know so little about him that reaction is muted, to say the least.

Special forces seems right to me. I'm not sure how safe they would be there.
