Ron Paul's proposals are basically ultraconservative in their general thrust.
His proposals led to much smaller government through strict fiscal austerity.
Basically Ron wants to reduce the DoD by about 15%.
He wants to eviserate most social programs. Complete elimination or elimination by huge reductions and attrition
If there's any real difference btween RP and his fellow GOPers, it is his foreign policies and his indifference about some social issues.
If RP were elected and IF he could ram his proposals through Congress, I suspect the USA would have a deflationary depression that would rival the GREAT depression in scope.

Ron Paul's biggest shortfall is that he takes libertarianism to the extreme. When given a choice between doing what is right and doing what is Libertarian he will side with Libertarian every time.
He voted to go after Bin Laden. FAIL.
He never said we "deserve" the 9/11 attack. He attributes our foreign policy to the event as prescribed by the intelligence community as blowback. You've been listening to way too much O'really, and not paying enough attention to O'reality.
He's also not really libertarian. He holds some libertarian views, but his stance is mostly classical liberalism. He leans heavily on the side of constitutional and fiscal conservative. Something the Republicans actually used to stand for many decades ago.
Still, canada would invade us if Ron Paul was president.
Ron Paul's biggest problem is he does not know how to keep his mouth shut when his brain goes all libertarian on him. He does not have to spout out everything that is running through his brain. When he does, he comes off like a looney old man.
The only thing worse than Ron Paul himself is Ron Paul supporters. They take his utterances as gospel and flock to the interweb to espouse his latest misfire. Ron Paul's supporters make him look even crazier than he is
