They probably would be able to fight off the North Koreans by themselves, the issue becomes if the SK's start pushing north, the Chinese may jump in.

We are more of a trip-wire for the Chinese these days than the North Koreans. Our main aid to SK is the fact we would nuke the crap out of the North if they irradiated Seoul.

Why would the South invade north?

They wouldn't, but I would think any Northern Invasion of the South would, if stopped, be followed up by a knockout attempt afterwards by the SK's taking the offensive.

Why return to the status quo if you can end the situation?

I believe that the answer is absolutely NOT.

There is no reason why North Korea wants South Korea,

All "experts" agree that North Korea wants only one thing: For the Kim family to survive and to be the rulers.

Why would North Korea want to jeopardize that by getting into a fight with the equally tough South Koreans? The chaos would likely result in the fall of the Kim family dynasty.

And, besides, China -- which wants stability in the region -- would not allow North Korea to do so anyway.
