If the Republican Party were a normal party...

The republican party created this mess themselves.

They were a party who could not win and so they desided to rewrite history, lie their asses off and cheat in elections.

In doing so they have created a base that is out of touch with reality.

Its their own monster.

Their base hates the government our founders left us and pretend its something other than it really is.

Uninformed and filled with lies is no way for a party to aid its country.

These are the same economists that are so surprised when their guesses are wrong? I can only conclude they use a poor model which yields poor results.

If the Republican Party were a normal party, it would take advantage of this amazing moment. It is being offered the deal of the century: trillions of dollars in spending cuts in exchange for a few hundred billion dollars of revenue increases.

A normal Republican Party would seize the opportunity to put a long-term limit on the growth of government. It would seize the opportunity to put the country on a sound fiscal footing. It would seize the opportunity to do these things without putting any real crimp in economic growth.

The party is not being asked to raise marginal tax rates in a way that might pervert incentives. On the contrary, Republicans are merely being asked to close loopholes and eliminate tax expenditures that are themselves distortionary.

This, as I say, is the mother of all no-brainers.

But we can have no confidence that the Republicans will seize this opportunity. That’s because the Republican Party may no longer be a normal party. Over the past few years, it has been infected by a faction that is more of a psychological protest than a practical, governing alternative.

The members of this movement do not accept the logic of compromise, no matter how sweet the terms. If you ask them to raise taxes by an inch in order to cut government by a foot, they will say no. If you ask them to raise taxes by an inch to cut government by a yard, they will still say no.

The members of this movement do not accept the legitimacy of scholars and intellectual authorities. A thousand impartial experts may tell them that a default on the debt would have calamitous effects, far worse than raising tax revenues a bit. But the members of this movement refuse to believe it.

The members of this movement have no sense of moral decency. A nation makes a sacred pledge to pay the money back when it borrows money. But the members of this movement talk blandly of default and are willing to stain their nation’s honor.

The members of this movement have no economic theory worthy of the name. Economists have identified many factors that contribute to economic growth, ranging from the productivity of the work force to the share of private savings that is available for private investment. Tax levels matter, but they are far from the only or even the most important factor.

But to members of this movement, tax levels are everything. Members of this tendency have taken a small piece of economic policy and turned it into a sacred fixation. They are willing to cut education and research to preserve tax expenditures. Manufacturing employment is cratering even as output rises, but members of this movement somehow believe such problems can be addressed so long as they continue to worship their idol.

Over the past week, Democrats have stopped making concessions. They are coming to the conclusion that if the Republicans are fanatics then they better be fanatics, too.

Mere parsimony is not economy. Expense, and great expense, may be an essential part in true economy.
Edmund Burke

Sadly, you are right. The Republican Party is not a "normal party". Unfortunately for all of America, they have become Liberal Lite. Thankfully, after 40+ years of the political spectrum sliding so far to the left that adhering to the Constitution makes you "radical", the American people have woken up and rejected the liberal lite GOP. Thank you to Obama, Pelosi, and Reid for being such radical Marxists that you woke up the American people and gave rise to the Tea Party.

America is taking back it's country from the Dumbocrats who have destroyed it with Marxism/Socialism/Communism. We should not raise taxes an inch. In fact, we should be fighting to cut taxes during this economic crisis created by the Dumbocrats.

You want to close the "loopholes"? Cut income taxes to 10%, eliminate all tax write off's (won't be necessary with only a 10% tax on your income) and eliminate all other taxes (sales tax, property tax, death tax, capital gains tax, payroll tax, etc.). Finally, force government to responsibly live within the fiscal means of the 10% they collect and force them to limit their powers to what is outlined in the Constitution.

All problems solved. If anyone has a problem with the limited powers of the governemnt outlined in the Constitution or of government having to "live within their means" like all of the rest of us do, then you are clearly a radical left-wing idiot and nobody cares what you think anyway. Cuba, China, and Russia are waiting for you - we have no desire to hear what you have to say.

"The members of this movement do not accept the legitimacy of scholars and intellectual authorities" Now that hits the nail on the head!

Last week during a discussion with Rabbi, I posted the article:
Top Economist: Even Brief Default Will Cause New Recession And Blow Recovery ‘Out Of The Water’
Top economist: Raise the debt ceiling or blow the recovery 'out of the water' - Yahoo! News

In this article, Dr Mark Zandi, who is Chief Economist for Moody’s Analytics stated:
"If we get to August 2 and there is no debt ceiling limit, and there has to be significant spending cuts – even if Congress and the administration reverse themselves days later, I think the damage will have been serious, and we probably would be thrown into a recession.”

Rabbi countered with:
________________________________________
Street economist says default better than cuts - MarketWatch

"There ya go.
queuing carping irrelevance in 3..2..1..."
______________________________________
But from the linked article by Rabbi
"His view stands at odds with the rest of Wall Street, which has frequently communicated to congressional Republicans as well as the White House a desire to see the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling increased".
In other words, Ethan Harris is in the minority.

And there you have it, Rabbi reflects the Tea Party mentality. They blow off a majority of top economists because the majority of top economist disagree with the Tea Party's economically destructive objective of not raising the debt limit.
And there we have it again, a classic case of ignoring those who are experts at economics by ideological fanatics who don't have a clue about economics.

Most traders would rather see steep cuts and a temporary default than no default and no cuts. This is simply fact.
It doesnt matter that someone is in the minority. These issues aren't decided by vote.
The ratings agencies are looking carefully at what's happening. If they don't see serious proposals to address the serious spending and deficit issues we have, they will downgrade.
The Left doesn't seem to get this. Even though we lived through a shutdown in the 90s and nothing happened.

Democrats never agree on anything? Except money and bribes buy votes, enter Ocare.

Republicans on the otherhand are holding their leaders feet to the fire rather than conforming to his deal with O.

It is very frustrating to read comments such as you post. There is a reason for "Ocare" which was an effort to reform a broken healthcare system. Not broken in the sense actual care was poor, broken in the sense that is was too expensive & in too many cases cost familes everything they worked for over a lifetime; it also failed to cover all Americans.

The arguments you seem to accept and the opinions you hold are bought and paid for by the special interests which profit from the current system, at the expense of our fellow citizens.

Democrats argue about process and expediency, they agree on one immutable truth: The Golden Rule.

Callous conservatives which dominate the GOP today reject this rule and as we have seen put profit over people as a matter of principle.

It is equally frustrating to read your comments. Democrats seem to believe they have the God given right to reach into someone else's bank account and withdrawal funds for their needs. I'm sorry if healthcare is so expensive that it "familes everything they worked for over a lifetime" or that it "failed to cover all Americans" - truly I am. But where in the Consitution does it say that we have to "cover all American's" when it comes to healthcare? You know who believes in that? Cuba. The former U.S.S.R. North Korea. Tell me, how are things woking out for those countires that live in a perpetual state of poverty?

If healthcare "wasn't working" in your opinion and in the opinion of Democrats, then why didn't you guys fix it yourself? Not ask government to unconstutionally force me to use their system. Not ask government to take what someone else has earned. Fix it yourself. Create a CHARITY - paid for by you caring Democrats and not us "callous" conservatives to solve the problem.

But the truth is, at the end of the day, this is all about liberals getting their hands on hard working conservatives money. It's more of the same old from the gimme, gimme, gimme greedy liberals who aren't willing to take personal responsibility for themselves in life.

As a matter of FACT, LBJ and J Edgar Hoover rejected Javits for the Warren Commission because.......................................................he was TOO liberal.

You should follow your own advice - you don't have the right to your own facts. The political spectrum has slid so far to the left, merely suggesting that government should adhere to the constitution makes you a "radical". All you hear from the left-wing media is that the Tea Party is "radical". Fareed Zakaria said exactly that the other day on CNN. So has Chris Matthews on MSNBC. And so have the idiot Hollywood cocaine elite. The Tea Party is simply suggesting we get back to constitutional government. So if they are "radical", that means George Washington, Ben Franklin, James Madison, and the rest of our founders were "radicals". And that is a sad statement.

We have more social programs now than in any point in our history - so it is simply asinine for you to claim the political spectrum has shifted to the right. The middle of the spectrum should be strict constitutional government. That's what this nation was founded on. That is the center. The radical right would be anarchists (no government at all, no rules) and the radical left would be Communism (government controls all). But sadly, even being a liberal today (which is what the GOP is) is considered the "far right" and being moderate (ie constitutional government) is now "radical" thanks to the break down of American values, the propaganda by the left, and the new lazy American that wants the government to provide for them.

Listen to the "golden boy" of the left - JFK himself - talk about how cutting taxes is the only way to end a bad economy, and how cutting taxes would even help the government earn more revenue. This is exactly what the new liberals - the GOP - has been saying and they have been labeled as the "far right fringe". JFK today would be attacked by the left - which has become so radical anything short of Marxism/Socialism/Communism is considered unacceptable: JFK: The Case For Tax Cuts : Paul Williams : Free Download & Streaming : Internet Archive

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the Republican party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."
Barry Goldwater

Yes - George W. Bush. Who bailed out private industry with tax payer dollars. That is LIBERAL my friend. Spending BILLIONS to help keep private companies going is LIBERAL. Good grief are you confused. Recklessly spending more than you have is LIBERAL - and that's exactly what George W. Bush did. Raising taxes is LIBERAL - and that's exactly what his father George H.W. Bush did. We've seen exactly 1 conservative president in the past 40+ years - Ronald Reagan. And even he spent beyond our means, though he had to, to end the Cold War and repair the damages done by the idiot Jimmy Carter.

Hey sonny boy, I've been around since Harry Truman was in the White House. The Republican party AND the Democratic party have moved to the RIGHT, not the left over the last 40 years.

You have a right to your own opinion, but not your own facts.

Unless you can explain away Liberal Republicans like Dwight D. Eisenhower, Nelson Rockefeller and Jacob Javits...

As a matter of FACT, LBJ and J Edgar Hoover rejected Javits for the Warren Commission because.......................................................he was TOO liberal.

So senility is your plea for being so stupid?
The GOP has gotten more conservative in some ways, more liberal in others. The Democrats have simply gone over to the dark side.
JFK would be about as welcomed as Joe lieberman. Scoop Jackson and Hubert Humphrey would be called warmongers.

Can you name any liberal Republicans today? Didn't think so. Do you think mindlessly throwing around names is supposed to impress? Scoop Jackson WAS a warmonger, Humphrey was not. Even someone with pedestrian knowledge knows 'Scoop' was the guy the warmongering neoconservatives were aligned with. Jackson was the original neocon. The neocons abandoned the Democratic party because the Democrats were too peaceful for their blood-lust. They were enticed to join the GOP by Ronald Reagan.

Your screed on "neo-cons" is hilarious, a good parody of an argument.

More glaring evidence you have no idea what you are talking about: Just a few weeks ago former liberal Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney was in Libya talking about how bad America is and that we should be more like Libya. Now more video of the former Congresswoman has surfaced of her on Iranian TV saying America is the most violent nation on the planet and responsible for assassinations.

Go back 60 years, can you imagine JFK bashing the US and saying we need to be more like Libya and Iran?!?!? JFK is the guy who said "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country". But today, we have a former Dumbocrat Congresswoman bashing the US all over the world and suggesting we need to be more oppresive like Libya and Iran. Today, the only thing the greedy liberal asks is what can Uncle Sam give me? Endless supply of food? Not enough. Free housing? Not enough. Free healthcare? Give me more!

As I said before, the spectrum has slid so far to the left, being liberal (like the JFK era) today makes you a "right-wing nut". How dare you suggest we cut taxes and stop asking Uncle Sam to do for you! Even though that's exactly what the Dumbocrats golden-boy did!

Facts - they are a bitch, uh? It's why Dumbocrats hate facts.

If the Republican Party were a normal party at this moment in time, we would be signing our future away with a $2.7T debt ceiling increase with another looming within two years. Then we go bankrupt. Fortunately, a group of true Americans showed up and mustered some courage to change our course.

The party is OVER. Wake up from your drunken spending spree and get to work.

First of all, you know little or nothing about JFK. Maybe you should educate yourself on Kennedy's chief economist Walter Heller who urged a classically Keynesian solution: running a deficit to stimulate growth. Maybe you could start with Econ 101 and learn what a demand side tax cut is vs. supply side cuts. Demand side cuts rest on the Keynesian theory that public consumption spurs economic activity.

Hey Einstein, if you want to go back to the way our founding fathers governed, then you will be in for some BIG surprises...

Our founding fathers were not 'free-marketeers', they didn't believe in any 'invisible hand' controlling their economy. They believed in GOVERNMENT'S hand strictly controlling the economy and especially corporations.

HERE is a concept you faux Constitutionalists are never willing to accept. Our founding fathers outlived the documents they created and actually governed. Ever hear of the saying, actions speak louder than words? So HOW they actually governed is how THEY actually interpreted those documents.

Our founding fathers believed in very heavy regulations and restrictions on corporations. They were men who held ethics as the most important attribute. They viewed being paid by the American people for their services as a privilege not a right. And they had no problem closing down any corporation that swindled the people, and holding owners and stockholder personally liable for any harm to the people they caused.

Eighteenth-century laws regulating corporations in America

*Corporations were required to have a clear purpose, to be fulfilled but not exceeded.

*Corporations’ licenses to do business were revocable by the state legislature if they exceeded or did not fulfill their chartered purpose(s).

*The state legislature could revoke a corporation’s charter if it misbehaved.

*The act of incorporation did not relieve corporate management or stockholders/owners of responsibility or liability for corporate acts.

*As a matter of course, corporation officers, directors, or agents couldn’t break the law and avoid punishment by claiming they were “just doing their job” when committing crimes but instead could be held criminally liable for violating the law.

*State (not federal) courts heard cases where corporations or their agents were accused of breaking the law or harming the public.

*Directors of the corporation were required to come from among stockholders.

*Corporations had to have their headquarters and meetings in the state where their principal place of business was located.

*Corporation charters were granted for a specific period of time, such as twenty or thirty years (instead of being granted “in perpetuity,” as is now the practice).

*Corporations were prohibited from owning stock in other corporations, to prevent them from extending their power inappropriately.

*Corporations’ real estate holdings were limited to what was necessary to carry out their specific purpose(s).

*Corporations were prohibited from making any political contributions, direct or indirect.

*Corporations were prohibited from making charitable or civic donations outside of their specific purposes.

*State legislatures could set the rates that some monopoly corporations could charge for their products or services.

*All corporation records and documents were open to the legislature or the state attorney general.

The Early Role of Corporations in America

The Legacy of the Founding Parents

If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.

Fail. Those rules are still in place and not the realm of Congress. Congress is not the executive branch nor the courts. Now get down off your soap box before you get a nose bleed.
