If the Pakistanis are our friends, and claim to be fighting the same terrorists we are, then why did they just sentence the doctor who helped find Bin Laden to 33 years?!

Since 2002 we have given Pakistan 19 billion of aid plus 6 billion of economic aid. Are you effing kidding me?

If the Pakistanis are our friends, and claim to be fighting the same terrorists we are, then why did they just sentence the doctor who helped find Bin Laden to 33 years?!

A senior U.S. official with knowledge of counter-terrorism operations against Al Qaeda in Pakistan said the doctor was never asked to spy on Pakistan.

Send in the SEALs......

SNIP:

"He was asked only to help locate Al Qaeda terrorists, who threaten Pakistan and the U.S.," the official told Fox News. "He helped save Pakistani and American lives. His activities were not treasonous, they were heroic and patriotic."

Good question. They were never our "friends", they are "friends" when it suits them ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$), we should be able to tell them to release that guy

The question is, how can we expect the locals to turn in terrorists in the future, when this is the punishment the Pakistanis (the same people we supposedly pay to fight terrorists) accord such heroic actions?

Thats a good point Roudy, it really puts people off locating terrorists in the future. Shocking that the doctor is in prison. The Pakistanis really aren't friends - if they were, they might have realised Bin Laden was living around the corner from their military academy. I can understand them being pissed off over ISAF killing their soldiers but I wouldn't trust them.

Because he made the Pakistani military look like idiots.
Because the Pakistani president is hanging onto power by the skin of his teeth.
Because the Pakistani government is worried about civil unrest.

It's internal politics, man...

They're just trying to see what they can get away with without their welfare checks being cut off.

the trial document shows he was in fact found guilty of terrorism, not treason under Pakistan's much criticised Frontier Crimes Regulation, a set of draconian laws first imposed by the British on the Pashtun tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.

The court document said Afridi was an active supporter of Lashkar-e-Islam, a banned militant group, and its leader Mangal Bagh.

It also claimed he used his position as head of a government hospital to channel nearly £14,000 to the group and gave medical care to various militant commanders.

The guy was a spy for a foreign government.

We would do the exact same thing if the situation was reversed.
He helped locate the most wanted terrorist in the world. How is that "spying"? What Pakistani state or other secrets did he give away, in what way did he betray his country? Unless their hiding of Bin Laden WAS a state secret

He should have been given a medal. Most Americans know that the Pakistanis were totally complicit in hiding Bin Laden. They built the mansion for him in a military city next to Pakistan's West Point, and they kept lying to the world, acting like they had no idea where Bin Laden was. Not only did our govt not punish Pakistan for this betrayal but we are still forking out the billions, for nothing. And now they do this?

We do need to see what we can do to help this guy, get him a green card and bring him over here. He is a hero to us.

They built the mansion for him in a military city next to Pakistan's West Point,
They didn't build it for him; it was built many years before he moved in. Nor was it a mansion.

Just saying
If an American helped a European country locate an international terrorist hiding in the US, would that person be charged for "espionage" by the American Govt.? By Pakistani standards the place was a mansion, and was speically modified with additional walls and barriers. There is no way the Pakistani govt was not aware and complicit in hiding Bin Laden in a neighborhood like that. That's why they bulldozed the house down not to long ago, to hide their tracks.

Yes of course. One Muslim stands up and does the right thing, and he and his family are punished like this.

Of course the Pakistani government was in on it, no way he could have lived there without their say so.
