Ukraine did not elect a pro-Russia government. Victor Yanukovych campaigned and once elected worked towards a pro-western aligned economy and alliance. This led to violence and Yanukovych fled the country to escape arrest for having employed snipers to fire on the protesters. He abandoned his Presidency and fled to Russia.
