Kate Smith sang two songs mocking the racism of her time......Paul Robeson, a black civil rights activist also sang those same songs...he has buildings named after him here in Chicago....

Because she sang those two songs, mocking racism, she has been banned by the sports teams she sang for back in the day....

If she must be banned for singing two songs....why don't we have to end the Major League Baseball industry since for decades they refused to allow Blacks to play on their teams.....? They actually prevented Black Players from playing...it was an organized, concerted effort to deny these players an ability to play the game and to make a living playing it...

2 songs, to mock racism, vs. a concerted, orchestrated effort by Baseball teams to keep Blacks from playing...

Shouldn't Baseball in this country be over.....at least the teams that were around at the time should be closed down and their assets given to the players they cheated....

Right?

Who is Black Civil Rights activist Paul Robeson...who also sang both of those songs?

Paul Robeson - Wikipedia

In 1976, the apartment building on Edgecombe Avenue in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan where Robeson lived during the early 1940s was officially renamed the Paul Robeson Residence, and declared a National Historic Landmark.[316][317][318] In 1993, the building was designated a New York City landmark as well.[319] Edgecombe Avenue itself was later co-named Paul Robeson Boulevard.

The main campus library at Rutgers University-Camden is named after Robeson,[327] as is the campus center at Rutgers University-Newark.[328] The Paul Robeson Cultural Center is on the campus of Rutgers University-New Brunswick.[329]

n 1972, Penn State established a formal cultural center on the University Park campus. Students and staff chose to name the center for Robeson.[330]

A street in Princeton is named after him. In addition, the block of Davenport Street in Somerville, New Jersey, where St. Thomas AME Zion Church still stands is called Paul Robeson Boulevard.[331]

Okay, you make a couple of different points here.

MLB has atoned for it's segregationist past. A long time ago, in the millions of dollars it's spent on minority players.

As for Kate Smith, is her version of "God Bless America" really the best? honestly, I've heard much better renditions sung by more current artists.

Butwhataboutism isn't a defense. She sang song with racist lyrics. She never apologized for doing so when she was alive and she didn't die until 1986, by which time we can all agree, everyone knew that was wrong.

You don't know what you're talking about as far as Kate. Those songs MOCKED racism. No one mentioned her version of "God Bless America." She is indeed a hero, bringing billions of dollars in to fight the Nazis to say she is 'racist' is beyond nuts.

....so then, the blacks can't complain about anything because the US/WHITE tax payers/etc have spent $millions ''atoning for slavery/etc

Really? What about all the charity work she may have done in her life that we don't know about? We only know one side of the story, and it isn't even accurate, as many people have pointed out, those songs mocked racists, they didn't support racism, and one of the Civil Rights figures of the time, Paul Robeson, also sang those songs as a professional singer....

Ooooh, noes, it's another White Person not having her privilege! We can't have that.

Sorry, the heroes in WWII were the guys who hit the beaches at Iwo Jima and Normandy, not some fat cow who sang a song.

Okay, I think that falls back into why rappers can use the N-word and white folks can't...

By that logic, we need to give Michael Jackson a pass on the kiddy-diddling because he did all that work for charity.

....so then, the blacks can't complain about anything because the US/WHITE tax payers/etc have spent $millions ''atoning for slavery/etc

Um. no. When we have actual equality in this country, and cops who don't pull you over for DWB's... THEN they can stop complaining.

WRONG--you just contradicted yourself

I've been over the dumbass crap on ''cops'''...yours is a ridiculous argument

How exactly has mlb atoned for their racism? Affording blacks the oportunity to get market based wages and be allowed to play is atonement? Then let’s stop all this whining about slavery and segregation.

Your opinion on the quality of the song is irrelevant.

What matters more than issuing a public apology it’s what’s in a person’s heart. We’ve all said racist things in our life at one point or another, and we don’t know if she was indeed a bigot or not.

I was thinking more of the seven and eight figure contracts they are getting now. but never mind.

You mean other than she sounds like a bellowing cow, yes.

I don't think you sing a song like that without being a bigot.

Then why did Paul Robeson, Civil Rights Activist, sing those same songs as a professional singer?

Baseballs racism in the 30s was much more damaging than Kate Smiths
Kate has no quotes or actions that endorse racism. Baseball in the 30s had many in which they defended segregated Baseball

Kate’s version of God Bless America may not be the best, but it was the first in 1938

I'm not invested in Kate Smith, and it wasn't about "God Bless America." The two songs in question were songs mocking the racist attitude of the time, but they are offensive as they make the point....for singing these songs way back when, she has now been banned by these teams.

If she can should be banned for a misunderstood situation with these songs....the other situation....outright racism and denial of access by all of the baseball teams at the same time, a coordinated and long term practice of keeping Black players out of the league, would logically mean those baseball teams should close up shop and no longer exist.....dittos Yale University, where the founder was an actual slave seller and slave killer.

We actually agree on something.....

True you don't seem to be thinking much in this thread. Read some history and maybe you won't come on here saying such silly stuff. America was very cohesive at that time and everyone felt threatened by the Nazis, Axis and 3rd Reich. Show us ANY legitimate history account of Kate Smith being a racist. BTW the 3 Stooges were a parody of Hitler and his henchmen are they now considered racist?

History will condemn baseballs racist policies much more severely than Kate Smith for singing some popular songs of that day

For Baseball to condescendingly condemn Smith given their reprehensible segregationist practices is mockable

Yeah, you're babbling.

The stooges did a couple of shorts making fun of HItler, which HAVE largely been pulled from circulation.

In fact, a lot of stuff gets pulled because upon further reflection, it wasn't just in very good taste.

Remember a little movie from the 80's called 'Revenge of the Nerds". Today, upon reflection, it basically includes invasion of women's privacy, and a scene where the 'hero' rapes one of the 'mean girls' through deception, and she's cool with it.

Hey, no one considers that funny today! Views have changed.

Yes, America was very cohesive in WWII, in that we put a lot of the other conflicts aside for a few years. But we didn't get rid of Jim Crow even after we tapped African Americans to fight the war and build the weapons we needed to win.

Ironically, WWII probably triggered the civil rights movement, because for the first time, they got let out of the Jim Crow box, made good money, had good factory jobs, and wondered why they still had to ride on the back of the bus.

Okay, reality check...

We aren't going to get rid of baseball.

We can make an example of Kate Smith, though... because she's dead and won't care.

I think we are still sending the right message.
