That president certainly knew. The strategic choice was to let it happen or not. Leaders are prepared to make 'certain sacrifices' for the 'common good'. If the US had not gotten into the war when it did, when would it have? Would it have? Would it have developed the bomb if England had fallen?

I think he could have made another choice and tried to have the US Navy 'accidentally' run into the Japanese strike force. A battle begins, who knows who fired first. It doesn't matter who wins, America would support a war. That way those who died would have at least known what was happening and had a hand in trying to defeat the enemy.

Anyway, that's not the topic; sorry. It does connect though. Presidents 'know' in detail, by inference and by deduction. At least one must be present. The resultant decisions are judged according to their success. Bush's wars and debt accomplished their goal; subjugation of future administrations to the agenda set. Economic and diplomatic decisions would have to be determined by priorities put in place.
