I wonder if the GOP remembers the last time.......

Yeah............we COULD do those things if Congress would ever get their shit together.

However..................doing those things THIS YEAR would have no effect on the debt ceiling coming up in March. If it was to have any actual effect, it would have to have been done about 4 years ago.

You know, all those exact same things were said last time; if only those great cuts had been made before, but now we have to pay the bills that we have already incurred....That lead to a deal where the debt limit was raised by $2.4 Trillion, and included $917 billion in "cuts". Less than 18 months ago, we added $2.4 trillion to the debt ceiling, and we have already spent it and are back for more. The sequester was the arrangement that was made in that compromise; look where we've gotten with that. Washington doesn't even want to live up to the $1.2 trillion already agreed. I think it's reasonable for the conservatives to use whatever is at their disposal to try to reduce spending, and the debt ceiling and sequester are the only chips they have. As for the ratings agencies, you don't think they're going to downgrade us if we add another $4 trillion in debt over the next 4 years?

We'll be lucky to only have an additional 4 trillion in 4 years, I look for closer to 7 trillion. Maobama will not be satisified with any level of spending, he will push for more regardless.

Another rw who hasn't been paying attention.

I can pretty confidently say that if the GOP keeps along with their current lines of stupidity, they're gonna lose big in 2014.

I might not be remembering everything right but at the end of the day the debt ceiling did get raised did not? Our credit rating still got downgraded did it not? We are still adding to a 16 trillion dollar debt are we not? Simply following the Democratic line of stupidity over the GOP one is not really a step in the right direction is it?

you should expect another downgrade if they do that.

but that's what they want.

then the nutters can say its the president's fault.

which is really kind of funny.

what's more amazing is that they never said boo when shrub ran up our debt to the tune of 5 trillion plus...

Then congress should have never passed the spending bill. If we can't afford it, why pass it? Do you not have a limit on your credit cards? I do.

Are you another rw who doesn't understand that the money has already been spent?

WRONG, they have borrowed up to the debt celing, raising it will allow them to borrow more and then spend it. You can budget money all day but if you don't have the money you can't spend it. When the appropriated the money they didn't include the necesary borrowing authority, that's why I said the debt celing should be done concurrently with the budget. It's really not that hard to understand.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

The guy who said this apparently changed his mind once he was presented with a leadership opportunity. Too bad, because I would agree with that guy's original premise.

The buck stops in the Oval Office. If it isn't a priority there, it will never happen, and it appears not to be in the second term agenda.

Everyone knew for at least a year that the fiscal cliff deadline was there.
The Republicans and Democrats had all that time to put together proposals.
In the end we get a tax hike and what did we get as far as spending cuts.

Does anyone think that the GOP will have a winning hand come the debt ceiling?...
Obama wants to raise more revenue.

Yep, when Maobama was in the senate he said the the spending was reckless, irresponsible and unpatriotic during a debt ceiling debate. Yet he borrowed like there was no credit limit and wants more.

Yes Obama played his hand on the fiscal cliff deal when he made it about needing revenue he will have a very hard time trying to play the same hand again for another tax increase in only two months. If he tries to pull that again the Republicans very easily point out he just got a tax increase on the promise of future spending cuts if he goes back on that he gridlocks the government and threatens his entire second term agenda as well as confirming to those who have not figured it out yet that neither he or the Democrats have any interest in cutting spending and dealing with the debt and deficits. While Obama might be willing to risk this I don't think the Democrats up for reelection in 2014 will.

So.................the US should just default on it's bills?

The US should stop running up its bills.

Cut defense spending in half, raise the Social Security and Medicare eligibility ages to 70, institute a permanent ban on tax expenditures.

Done!

just imagine how great social security could be if the eligibilty age was raised to 80 !!!

We are living far longer than our ancestors did who enacted Social Security. If you had a lick of common sense, you would quickly grasp that if we are living longer, we should be working longer. We are healthier and living longer

Instead, the politicians and the people who pour the piss for you to drink have given you the impression Social Security is supposed to be a way of for longer and longer periods for larger and larger percentages of our population. Social Security originally covered less than 6 percent of the US population. Today, it provides for over 13 percent! And we have added an astronomically expensive program on top of it (Medicare).

This is simply unsustainable.

It's INSURANCE. A SAFETY NET.

Not a way of life.

You DO realize that it's Congress that passes the spending bills, right?

Remember last year when the House GOP was thinking that blocking the debt ceiling was going to be one of the ways that they could get Obama to cave in to their demands?

Apparently, they are prepared to do so again this year. Lindsey Graham has even stated publicly that the GOP needs to "keep their powder dry" for the debt ceiling fight.

But quick question......................does anyone remember what happened last time that they tried to block raising the debt ceiling? That's right............the groups that figure out the credit ratings of various countries downgraded the credit rating of the United States. Why? They said it was because of the uncertainty in Congress, as well as all the blocking that was being done by the GOP.

I've got news for you..................the reason the debt ceiling needs to be raised is because it's money CONGRESS HAS ALREADY VOTED INTO LAW AND HAS ALREADY BEEN SPENT!!!!!

Regular Americans can't get away with not paying their credit card bills, so why can Congress?

If they block the debt ceiling again, we could see yet another credit downgrade of this country, and it will all be caused by the GOP.
Laughable, it would be obamaturd and the dimwits fault, as was the last time, idiot.

Then why does obamaturd think he has to spend this country into obscurity? Idiot.

You're really quite the little retarded window licker on the short bus, ain't ya?

Might wanna revisit your H.S. civics class and find out who controls the spending.
