I petition the United states government to give us our moon base and advance humanity

Granny says next thing ya know, dey gonna be havin' a space race fer moon minerals...

Moon may harbor alien minerals
May 28, 2013 – Minerals found in craters on the moon may be remnants of asteroids that slammed into it and not, as long believed, the satellite’s innards exposed by such impacts, a study said Sunday.
The findings, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, cast doubt on the little we know about what the moon is actually composed of. It had long been thought that meteoroids vaporize on impact with large celestial bodies. Unusual minerals like spinel and olivine found in many lunar craters, but rarely on the moon’s surface, were therefore attributed to the excavation of subsurface lunar layers by asteroid hits.

Olivine and spinel are common components of asteroids and meteorites, and have been found on the floors and around the central peaks of lunar craters like Copernicus, Theophilus and Tycho that are around 100 km in diameter. On Earth, spinel and olivine create rare gemstones like peridot.

A team from China and the United States simulated the formation of moon craters and found that at impact velocities under 12 km per second, a projectile may survive the impact, though fragmented and deformed. Co-author Jay Melosh from Purdue University in Indiana, said the finding answers the conundrum exposed by earlier studies, which said craters the size of Copernicus were not big enough to have dredged up the contents of the moon’s deep, interior mantle.

In an article commenting on the study, Erik Asphaug, of the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University, said the theory meant that material excavated from Earth by large impacts during the planet’s early days may still be found on the moon. “Even more provocative is the suggestion that we might someday find Earth’s proto-biological materials, no longer available on our geologically active and repeatedly recycled planet, in dry storage up in the lunar ‘attic,’ ” Asphaug said. “Certainly, the potential of finding early Earth material is emerging as one of the primary motivations for a return to the moon by human astronauts in our ongoing search for the origin of life.”

Are we going to borrow the money to pay for that from China too?

So you want this country to become a third world shit hole? Sooner or later we must get back to what made us the super power.

Pushing the boundaries and being great. Something you don't believe in.

Tell that to your bank. What don't you understand about being broke ?

Going to the moon made us a super power ??

Having vision and the ability to push innovation made us the super power. You extreme conservatives are every bit as fucking bad for this country as the extreme left.

Says the idiots that want to build other countries infrastructure.

First off we need to start paying off the 17 trillion that we owe.
Secondly, you realize that meteorites hit the moon and they do not burn up like they do here on Earth.
That great , have a bunch of people on a moon base, so that they can get killed by meteorites.
This just happened on March of this year.

Having vision and pushing for innovation doesn't equal going to space. Extreme conservative ?

Tell that to the people that crossed the Atlantic to build this country. Space is 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of everything and it's a good idea to take advantage of it. You people don't think about the resources that will help us pay for that 17 trillion in debt.

Idiots like you think it can't happen here on earth? lol Doing something is sometimes risky but is worth doing.

Oh please, yes! yes! & the Newt Gingrich has already volunteered to be our head lunatic.

Mayor McCheese - & he won't even need any appliance or makeup, he's good to go! We can probably just shoehorn him into one of those Styrofoam clamshell thingees ...

Better then spending 2 trillion dollars to build up a ungrateful peoples nation. Seriously.

Using what for money?

It's rare, few and far in between here on Earth. The majority of them burn up. It happens constantly on the moon and none of them burn up on the moon.

I believe space is the final frontier. And for us to explore farther than we have, we are going to have to have a farther jump-off base than Earth. Perhaps the moon will have to do until we can get an even farther jumping point.

Is this a " the grass might be greener on the other side of the fence " scenario? How will your average American benefit from an outpost on the moon? Much of the earlier exploration done by man was to find resources and riches. What's the excuse this time ?
Weather satellites at least serve a purpose.

We are in the process of expanding space exploration to the Moon or Mars. We have an international space station where the ability to live in space is being tested and extended regularly. We are using it as an industrial, free market platform for indusrial scence projects and building up industrial free market support in areas like umanned supply shipping. We have an unmanned, mobile geology laboratory on Mars, roamimg the countyside looking for useful minerals. We have discovered remmamtsmof water under the surface of the Moon, though I don't thinl it is sufficient to have practicle application. There is currently a plan to capture an asteroid and park it in orbit around the moon, a first step in capturing space snowballs (comets) and using them as a water source for the moon or to geo-engineer Mars.

The moon has the problem of being to low in gravity to sustain an atmosphere and Mars suffers the issue of no magnetic field so solar winds bombard the surface and sweep away atmospheric gasses.

We are getting there but, unfortunately, we rely predomonately on free market and marginally functional democratic action so a large scale concerted action is out of the question.

We are getting there, just slowly.

Resources.

It was a US congressman that said, Why do we need to fund the NOAA weather satillites for when I can just turn on the Weather Channel to find out the weather?

Seems a problem is that so many people mistake their personal lack of knowledge for knowledge.

In order to find you must seek. "Not knowing" isn't the same as "knowing not".
