I had a fun murder mystery going in Writing Forum. Thought I'd give it a shot. Part of my murder mystery incorporated the death of two of my dogs in two weeks. We think it's linked to the dog food again, and I was just going to go back to sleep but then I thought I better come to pets and let you know whats going on.

I lost two catahoulas within a two week period. When we lost Dusty we acutally thought (including our vet) it was pyometra because she had come into heat and just didn't look well.

Please everyone understand, I really am in the middle of nowhere. There is no vet around the corner. On a good day our vet can make it to this area twice a week. Barring blizzards and or flooding.

Dusty died in our arms.

My vet may the good Lord bless her soul had to come thru flooded areas to make it here to euthanise American Bad Ass.

sorry crying

There was no reason for either of these dogs to die. We are talking primo. I bred them. I am a registered breeder.

They were gorgeous and in the prime of life. And my babies.

Pardon spelling, I'm crying again.

So we are thinking it has to be a horrid repeat of 2007. We're getting the word as fast as we can. To as many websites as possible. No one can believe this, but I think it's happenening again.

But only a couple of recalls are starting to come in including what we fed our dogs.

Here's the FDA link from 2007

Melamine Pet Food Recall of 2007
On March 15, 2007, FDA learned that certain pet foods were sickening and killing cats and dogs. FDA found contaminants in vegetable proteins imported into the United States from China and used as ingredients in pet food.

A portion of the tainted pet food was used to produce farm animal feed and fish feed. FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture discovered that some animals that ate the tainted feed had been processed into human food. Government scientists have determined that there is very low risk to human health from consuming food from animals that ate tainted feed. All tainted pet food, animal and fish feed, and vegetable proteins continue to be recalled and destroyed.

As a result of FDA and USDA's comprehensive investigation, on February 6, 2008, FDA announced that two Chinese nationals and the businesses they operate, along with a U.S. company and its president and chief executive officer, were indicted by a federal grand jury for their roles in a scheme to import products purported to be wheat gluten into the United States that were contaminated with melamine.

I just answered you in the other thread,

I'm on NyQuil and crying on and off still so I'm not up to my normal self at all here.

Here's the problem. The company that makes the food for all the brands and we are talking whether you buy Science Diet or a cheap brand like Mainstay all come out of only a few plants.

You think you're spending an extra $20 to buy YOUR dog better food. Nope.

You would pass out if you saw the list. I know I screamed a primordial scream.

And you know what the ingredient was? Wheat gluten. Freaking wheat gluten.

The sons of guns, I don't know if I can swear on this board, they spiked the wheat gluten with melamine.

Freaking melamine. Like who does this?

Here's an idea of what we could be up against.

Menu Foods produced all these brands. This was from the pet food scandal of 2007.

Melamine Pet Food Recall of 2007

yours,

td

Sorey about your loss. My dog was poisoned by our illegal alien neighbors last year. He was an 8 month old Pit Bull, and the best dog I had ever had. Take it easy.

I stick with Purina. So far, they have never been on any list of killer foods.

I'm so sorry about your pets. I feel your pain. :(

btw..when they are not eating Beneful by Purina, they eat California Natural, found at the local farmers supply and specialty pet food chain store Lemo's here in California. You may be able to order it online. It is not cheap. I stretch it by adding food I cook for them myself. A whole chicken cut up, boiled with 2 cups white rice, lots of cut up carrots into a stew. Remove all bones after chicken is cooked. After cooling, put in freezer bags. One chicken/rice/carrot stew mixed in with beneful or california natural lamb and rice dry food lasts a week. 4 dogs, one cat. PURINA. Or CALIFORNIA NATURAL. And make your own dog food.

I feed my puppys Eukanuba for Large Breed Puppy. Eukanuba is on this list of food made by the manufacturer in question. But Eukanuba says "No artificial preservatives, artificial flavors, artificial colorants, gluten or fillers added."

Does this really mean there is none of this poison wheat gluten in the food?

Eukanuba is backed by the Good Housekeeping Seal. What does that mean?

I buy it because it has the best ingredients listed on the bag of any brand of dog food & it cost way less than the other brands. Chicken is the #1 ingredient, not chicken bi-product.

California Natural Lamb Meal & Rice Large Bites Dry Adult Dog Food | PetFoodDirect

Yes, you can order it online. I don't use the canned stuff. Only the dry. They love it. Especially when I mix in the stew I cook for them.

My wife was pressured into buying 2 bags of this by a rep who told her how great it was & said she could return it if they did not like it. The puppys did not like it & I saw that the first ingredient was Corn & the second was Lamb Meal, not Lamb. That means lamb bones & bi-product. We took the shit back. We read all the food labels & settled on Eukanuba as having the best ingredients for the money.

My dogs have been eating Cal Natural for years...but they also get their stew in it as well.
They like Beneful too. Long as they stay healthy, I'm happy. And Purina has never been on the list from the 2007 recalls, nor anything after.

You are right about Purina, they are not on the list. Purina mills is located in the midwest farm belt so I suspect that is where all their ingredients come from. Their ingredients list is not that impressive but it is local food.

Natural is on the list several times but I don't know if that is Cal Natural.

The dry bagged Eukanuba for Large Breed Puppy I have been feeding is not on that list. It only list the wet canned & moist pouch food. So hopefully my puppies are safe.

Natural is a different brand than California Natural. That is what I usually buy (never canned anything, no matter who makes it)...or..if funds are tight, I buy the Beneful. They eat both brands. But what makes them eat it is the stew I add to it! Yum! I just made a huge pot of it today and the freezer has 3 big storage freezer bags full of it, plus what I left in the fridge for tomorrow's breakfast for them.

The cat won't eat anything other than Fancy Feast or Whiska's...preferably Fancy Feast. Pate' only. Or purina naturale in the green bag.

Be careful with the pate. It can wind up causing elevated uric acid levels.

I gave up feeding commercial foods to animals, or myself, years ago.
Dog food. Like all other things murkin, is based on greed and lies.

I feed California Natural and it does not contain any corn at all. Lamb meal also does not contain anything other than meat and tissue. No bones, hair, blood or hoof is allowed. Lamb or chicken meal are excellent sources of protein. Usually a food that lists lamb meal as a first ingredient will have a higher percentage of lamb in it that one that lists lamb as the first ingredient because lamb is weighed before the water is processed out.

"meat byproducts" and "meat meal"

Lamb Meal: Ingredients and Their Use in Our Foods
Lamb meal is rendered lamb tissues such as skeletal muscle, some bone and internal organs that have been dried and ground.

Typical lamb meal may contain high amounts of wool and starch, which reduces the quality. The presence of wool may be due to poor processing techniques. Starch contamination can be attributed to the presence of grain in the stomach not removed prior to processing. In addition, the lamb meal supply in the United States is limited and difficult to obtain.

"meat byproducts" and "meat meal"
Behind innocent-sounding words like "meat byproducts" and "meat meal" are horrific manufacturing practices that would turn your stomach. The nutritional considerations of pet foods go beyond the sources of meat in them. Pet food manufacturers add dangerous preservatives and vitamin fortifications that actually make your pets' food less healthy.

What mysterious "meat byproducts" really are
Let's start with what usually appears as the protein source and the primary ingredient in pet food: Meat byproducts or meat meal. Both are euphemisms for the parts of animals that wouldn't be considered meat by any smart consumer. The well-known phrase "meat byproducts" is a misnomer since these byproducts contain little, if any, meat. These are the parts of the animal left over after the meat has been stripped away from the bone. "Chicken by-products include head, feet, entrails, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, liver, stomach, bones, blood, intestines, and any other part of the carcass not fit for human consumption," writes Henry Pasternak in Healing Animals with Nature's Cures.
Meat meal can contain the boiled down flesh of animals we would find unacceptable for consumption. This can include zoo animals, road kill, and 4-D (dead, diseased, disabled, dying) livestock. Most shockingly, this also can include dogs and cats.

I'm not sure given the reduced quality of Iams foods since they went mass market, that they're the source I'd use when checking quality ingredients. Cal Natural, as yet, still uses the best ingredients. We'll see if that changes since their company was just sold to P&G. P&G purchased Iams/Eukanuba many years ago and cheapened the food to the point that I've seen it in Dollar General Stores. I've heard that they promised no changes to Cal Natural. I guess if they start making changes to it, then my puppy will have to be changed to another food. As to meat and bone meal. Just like poultry meal, you never know exactly what type of meat or poultry they might mean. It also changes from batch to batch. Unless a meal lists a specific, such as chicken, herring or salmon, always assume it's mystery meat.
