Everyone knows (or should know) that every drug (in fact, everything that we can ingest, breath, or absorb into our skin) has potential adverse effects to a certain percentage of the population. That percentage is typically quite, quite small. No drug is approved for use if the adverse reactions are more severe than the potential benefits.

For example, causing serious birth defects outweighs the benefits of controlling pre-natal nausea in mothers. This is the reason that Thalidomide is no longer available on prescription.

All the potential adverse effects and contraindications for every drug are published and available to anyone who cares to look them up.
