Most of the press reports are calling everybody refugees:

From Dictionary.com:

One who flees in search of refuge, as in times of war, political oppression, or religious persecution.

Regugee - an individual seeking refuge or asylum; especially : an individual who has left his or her native country and is unwilling or unable to return to it because of persecution or fear of persecution (as because of race, religion, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion)

refugee

an exile who flees for safety

--
Yes the last one fits but how about calling them evacuees?
----
Evacuee - A person evacuated from a dangerous area.

a person who has been evacuated from a dangerous place
---

Maybe if the press called them evacuees some of this "third-world" comparisons wouldn't be around.

Exactly---We only have "refugee camps" in America because some fricken journalist decided to put that label on them to magnify the appearance of the problem. A perfect example of journalists trying to spin a story--it's depressing to see how much of the media has chosen to use this misnomer.

hey the disaster response has been about on par with one mounted by a third world nation.

we're looking like shit in front of the whole world.

and now we have idiots like the FEMA director trying to blame the folks who were too poor or sickly to evacuate new orleans for their deaths :wtf:

If we went in and just shot everyone who was in the way, it would have been pulled off beautifully---everything was there and ready to go. Sorry NATO but I don't buy your comparison.

No we were there..the next day..
What everyone fails to remember IMO is there was NO ACCESS to the city, roads/bridges etc...that does present some problems with relief..Don't ya think?

Your right, the lake and river are flooded, combined with built up sediment, there really isn't anyway or better, anywhere to pump the water. This has been an ongoing delima for the city since forever.

Trust me, this was a mission the military could have pulled off.

Instead of planning properly for this thing, the government dropped the ball.

Consider this; they knew from before the storm's hit that water suppplies would likely be tainted and they would need a serious supply of clean water for a month or more. They knew flooding would be bad and they were wondering about the possibility of where they could set up and base relief operations out of. Did these people pay attention at all to the tsunami relief effort? Why was the Harry S. Truman deployed 4 DAYS AFTER the storm hit, instead of a day or more before it hit. We knew it was going to be bad, we just didn't know how bad it would be.

To avoid tragedy, you must think tragically. the idiots in charge of this disaster failed to understand that. now people are dying for no good reason other than their government has failed them miserably.

Two words Nato....State Government. Don't drop this on the feds. They're doing their part.

State's just as bad as the feds.

This is the thing that scares the hell out of me, the military is about the only institution that still gets things done.
