Chomsky has always described himself as an anarchist, I know, and I believe Zinn's beliefs have generally been of a similar alignment.

The problem with the OP is that one can attend Communist meetings without actually being a Communist. And we all know how unreliable and eager to jump the gun the FBI can be, and particularly was on the era in question.

The problem with the OP is that one can attend Communist meetings without actually being a Communist. And we all know how unreliable and eager to jump the gun the FBI can be, and particularly was on the era in question.

Before Stalin's crimes against humanity became impossible to ignore or deny, Communism and Socialism had millions of US voters lining up in support. In some of the most unlikely places - like Oklahoma - which had hundreds of socialist chapters.

In 1919 some very conservative populists in North Dakota got fed up with Wall Street thievery and created their own state bank. Which helps explain why ND is currently one of two states without a budget deficit and the only state with a surplus of jobs.

No doubt Howard taught Marxist theory in Communist Party halls. Howard's roots were lower working class immigrants and unlike most who advance up the capitalist ladder, he never forgot where he came from.

As to FBI unreliability...two intrepid agents filed a brief report after interviewing Howard's sister "under suitable pretext."

Except Howard never had any sisters.

Howard defined "American" much differently than most conservatives. He consciously chose to document the victims of America instead of its "winners."

"The rule of law does not do away with its unequal distribution of wealth and power, but reinforces that inequality with the authority of law.

"It allocates wealth and poverty in such calculated and indirect ways as to leave the victim bewildered."

The last three years of Wall Street authority are good examples of this version of Howard's vision of America.
