CHELSEA, MI, April 21, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Fidelis, a national Catholic based advocacy group, called on Howard Dean, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee to explain himself after telling the Christian Science Monitor Wednesday that "The religious community has to decide whether they want to be tax exempt or involved in politics."

Fidelis President Joseph Cella responded: "Howard Dean's statement makes it clear that he wants to muzzle America's churches and religious groups from professing what they believe on important issues facing our society. When it comes to debates over public policy and issues, Dean should be welcoming the voice of America's churches, not attempting to silence them. Instead Dean has shown utter disregard for people of faith by threatening the historical and treasured role of religious groups and churches in American public life."

"Under Howard Dean's rules, pastors, priests, and rabbis wouldn't have been able to mobilize people of faith to join the civil rights marches in Selma and Montgomery," said Cella.

Dean's statement is the latest in a series of comments directed toward conservative Christians. Just last year, Dean told the San Francisco Chronicled, "they are not very friendly….they all behave the same, and they all look the same."

Cella continued: "Dean's blatant hostility toward any church or religious group calls into serious question his supposed outreach to values voters following the 2004 elections. In essence, Dean is saying that if religious groups want to continue to speak out, then the hand of government is going to exact a penalty. Comments such as these continue to place Howard Dean and the Democratic Party in jeopardy of further alienating religious voters."

He represents Liberalcrats very well. They should choose him in the primaries.

I'm amazed at God being able to create people. Howard Dean is an idiot, and yet somehow manages to function as a human. Worse, people FLOCK to him. Yes, other idiots, but people nonetheless

Why can't this just shut the hell up? DNC Chairman was proof that Democrats don't think before they act.

We don't WANT him to shut up.

He is doing great things for the Republican party.

He is an idiot but he has a point in this sense. If churches, mosques, temples, etc all want to be TAX-EXEMPT, then they had better keep their opinions to themselves and their congregations. If they go out campaigning for a political party, they should lose their tax-exempt status as they are no different from any other company or activist group that does the same.

Other than that point, Dean makes himself to look like the raving lunatic that he always is.

It is not Christians fault that the Democrat party is irrespossibly satanic.

Technically, He is right. He is still a shithead though.

The issue is tax exempt status. Religious groups are becoming more and more involved in the political process and that borders violation of the qualifications to have tax exempt status.

What we shopuld do is just say that churches are tax exempt, PERIOD! Why would we not be interested in hearin g from them on issues of the day. As the law is written, churches are not suppose to be involved in politics. The answer is easy. Each area, church, group etc,... could just set up their own group of political action under some other name and make sure it dosen't turn a profit, so wa-lah.......NO TAX.

Did I mention that Howard Dean was a shithead!

So you like Howard Dean huh?

This is the same kind of B.S. behind the McCain-Feingold bill. Non-profit or not, a church has the right, under the first ammendment, to say what it wants. What it doesn't have the right to do is spend its money directly on political campaigns.

The way Dean's talking, churches would soon have to either stifle all sermons featuring homosexuality or abortion, because they're political issues, or they'd lose their tax exempt status. It's pure bullcrap.

And hey, I don't hear anyone complaining when other tax exempt organizations when they talk about political hot issues.
