Thanks to President Vladimir Putin and in no small part born out of the failures of the EU and Obama administration, the Crimean people finally have their desires fulfilled. All Americans should rejoice to see that the liberal ideal of self determination has been exercised. Democracy won!

How Ukraine Annexed Crimea. A Frank Conversation with Nikki Haley
From the point of view of the people who live on the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine annexed Crimea in 1991, grossly violating the rules of international law. Crimea became part of independent Ukraine illegally, and repeated attempts by the Crimean people to redress this injustice met with opposition from Kiev.

You are dreaming.

We can only hope Nikki Haley was speaking out of her ass. Like most American politicians, she must placate the military industrial complex.

New administration, but same old warmongering.

Have you had your coffee yet? Perhaps you are misinterpreting what has been presented.

Haley is mimicking the policies of her predecessors.

Did you read the article you posted?

Yes, and Trump is backing her up. The point is that despite this, the people of Crimea have had their desires for independence from Ukraine fulfilled.

Agreed. That is a good thing.

Unfortunately, the new American administration has a foreign policy position on Ukraine and Crimea that matches the last administration. Hardly something we can applaud.

^^^^Typical American dummy.

Believes Putin hijacked the election and is a warmonger, but doesn't know Obama is a warmonger and used the IRS to help him get reelected.

Putin: Most importantly, though, the Crimean parliament, which had been elected two years prior to the voting under the Ukrainian law, voted in favour of the referendum and later, in favour of independence. It is an absolutely legitimate representative body elected by Crimean people. This is first.

Second, the international legal framework. When the settlement of the Kosovo issue was under negotiation, the UN International Court of Justice passed a judgment that was met with applause by all Western partners. The Court decided that the settlement of independence issues did not require the decision of country's central authorities. So, we did everything in accordance with international law, the United Nations Charter and principles of democracy, which include, first of all, the free expression of peoples' will.

It seems to be controversial.
I've found some information and the story about Crimea and Ukraine is that in 1954 the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet did transfer Crimea from Russia to Ukraine.
Some say the decree wasn't legal because:
1) only 13 of 27 members were present, so there was no quorum;
2) Soviet Constitution said you can't altered the territory of USSR Republic without its consent, and Russia wasn't informed and didn't give any consent :eusa_think:

I think the root of the problem goes back to '45 when Stalin stripped Crimea of its autonomy.

One thing for certain is that the history is much more complicated than the dumbed down version Americans believe and use to justify aggression against Russia.

Another mistake made by Josif Stalin ;)
Anyway you're right Tehon history is always complicated but in this case the main point is that Crimea was part of Russia since 1783. That's why Crimeans feel Russians! :) (or at least the vast majority of them)

Pure nonsense. There are no any international laws on it. The Crimea was given to Ukriane by Khruschev, the leader of the USSR. What was going on later is not determined by any laws.
