How to solve the drug problem in the USA

Why is America such a shitty place to be that everyone needs to get stoned to cope with living there?

everyone is not getting stoned to cope with living in the US. In fact, a very small percent of the population in comparison to the US population even has a drug problem. You seem to forget that the population of the US is over 300 million.

EVil laws have evil consequences

Federal and state policies also impose collateral consequences on those convicted of drug offenses, such as denial of public benefits or licenses, that are not applicable to those convicted of other types of crime.[55]

Marijuana constitutes almost half of all drug arrests, and between 1990–2002, out of the overall drug arrests, 82% of the increase was for marijuana. In 2004 was approximately 12.7% of state prisoners and 12.4% of Federal prisoners were serving time for a marijuana-related offense.[56]

I am amazed how many of you like to feed the trolls here. Still, some of these replies have provided entertainment value.

Execute anyone convicted of selling hard drugs like heroin, cocaine or meth etc........

Help it's the police-state.

Sieg Heil.

Why are you at war with American citizens who like to use unauthorized recreational substances to make them feel good?

Should we execute people who use alcohol or tobacco?

and it is ridiculous to do that as well...a result from that is we have one of the largest prison populations in the world. Most of the people in jail are there for drug offenses and not for violent crime. We need to look at this as an addiction and medical issue not as a criminal one.

Responsible recreational drug use isn't a medical issue.

That last sentence is a lib-cliche if I ever heard one.

lib? Or libertarian and an actual medical situation that is documented as that you don't cure addictions by jailing someone...you cure it through treatment.

Treat the users - EXECUTE the dealers of hard drugs. They deal death. As much a poison as a cyanide capsule.

More people die from prescription drugs in this country than from all unauthorized non-state sanctioned drugs.

Which European country has the most liberal drug laws? (Hint: It's not the Netherlands.)

Although its capital is notorious among stoners and college kids for marijuana haze–filled "coffee shops," Holland has never actually legalized cannabis — the Dutch simply don't enforce their laws against the shops. The correct answer is Portugal, which in 2001 became the first European country to officially abolish all criminal penalties for personal possession of drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine.

At the recommendation of a national commission charged with addressing Portugal's drug problem, jail time was replaced with the offer of therapy. The argument was that the fear of prison drives addicts underground and that incarceration is more expensive than treatment — so why not give drug addicts health services instead? Under Portugal's new regime, people found guilty of possessing small amounts of drugs are sent to a panel consisting of a psychologist, social worker and legal adviser for appropriate treatment (which may be refused without criminal punishment), instead of jail.
