How to Cut the Military Budget

Military spending is just a subsidy to those that profiteer.

Comrade, yea because using the military to defeat the USSR was a bad thing. Protecting this country and well the world is a bad thing. Companies make profits that is what they do! If they didn't make profits then they wouldn't be in business and wouldn't be producing ANYTHING! If there weren't companies producing products for our military, then we wouldn't have a military, nor would we have innovative military equipment!

Never mind that every dollar spent on defense means -someone- has a job and is therefore a contributor to society.
Can't say -that- about entitlements.

yeah, and as long as some good old protectionism is used, it might even be jobs for US americans. but not necessary the best equipment. hahaha

The point is that we are kidding ourselves if we believe we need a military larger than the next 20 countries combined to protect ourselves from invasion.

We have two friendly neighbors and two huge oceans that have kept us free from invasion for centuries.

The reason we maintain the military we do is to project power and maintain stability abroad....not to protect our shores from invasion

Ever read about D Day? It took two years planning and over a thousand ships to cover a 26 mile channel. Then we had to float Mulberrys over to build a port

No other nation or combination of nations hash the navy to handle a 3000 mile invasion. China needs it's army to control it's own people. They couldn't even handle a naval invasion of Taiwan. 90 miles away

Another example: The $13 billion the Navy wants to build a new aircraft carrier, when as Gates has said, we should reduce the number of carriers from 11 to 10.

However, notice the use of "under fire" as if a diversion is still not a valid military strategy. That said, the 2nd MEB most certainly took fire.

Defense spending is compensation for goods and serviced provided to the government by various vendors. The differences between this and redistributung wealth thru the welfare state are painfully obvious.

Why socialists think that -every- instance of government spending equates to socialism is mind-boggling.

This is both true and false.

The large majority of the equipment we use is both 'the best' and home-grown. Some of 'the best' stuff we use is not home-grown. Its not really possible for any given country to be the absolute best at making everything, so some of those things we get from elsewhere, or, more commonly, buy the rights and build it here. So, at least as far as the US military domestic jobs are guaranteed, and our troops will also have the best they can get.

This goes a LONG way to explain why we sepnd so much on defense, BTW - we could save a LOT of money by importing all our stuff from former Warsaw-Pact states - but their stuff sucks and would unnecessaruly cost a lot of American lives. The good stuff costs money, and we made the decision to spend money rather than people.
