How often do new posts rotate through

I cruise the board by clicking "new posts"----sometimes they are there for a long time--other times they disappear quickly--is this automated or someones' decision?

After 15 minutes of inactivity while signed on to the board, the board considers all your new posts to have been read.

Also, sometimes, when you search on new posts, and you've read a few of them, then return to the search results page, it will show those that you've read as read.
