How much does the British royal family cost the taxpayer?

The official answer is 38.5 million pounds last year (about US$63.5 million). But that does not include security which would probably be several times that amount.

One thing that people forget is how poverty still exists in that country, yet there is millions of tax payers money being pumped into the Royal Family each year. Why is a Royal Family still needed in England? And what services to they provide to the country?

Nearly 1 in 3 children in England live in poverty. In parts of London and Manchester, more than a quarter of children live in severe poverty. It's also a problem in affluent areas: in Cambridgeshire and Berkshire, 1 in 10 live in poverty. In 2010 we spent £1.8 million to help children and their families in England

The income the royals generate for the UK is 200 million pounds per year.

They aren't paid for their services either. The Royal family is extremely wealthy in their own right. The Queen doesn't need to be running around generating income for the country. She doesn't get paid for it. None of them do. How much would their services be worth on an hourly basis? The Queen is 86 years old, still gets up and goes to work every day. She doesn't even play golf. It is not up to the Royal family to support the British poor. Although the Royals support many charities that do support the poor.

If the Royal Family is paid 38 million dollars a year for all they do, they are grossly underpaid.

Roger Federer gets 9 mil a year to play tennis
Art Wiliams gets 9 mil to play hockey
Tiger Woods gets 10 mil to work weekends.
Kevin Pieterson gets one and a half mil for six weeks of work
Cristiano Reynaldo gets just over ten mil a year.
Kobe Bryant gets a whopping 23 million a year
Peyton Manning tops out at 28 million a year with endorsements.
Alex Rodriguez closes in on the Royal FAMILY with an annual income of 33 million for just him.
Kimi Raikkonen surpases the entire Royal family with an annual income of 45 million a year.

No one would even suggest that ARod support a few starving Puerto Rican kids living in some roach infested New York slum.

If the whole Royal family only gets 38 million pounds a year, they need a raise.

So your an American, you care about the English monarchy, how much the English tax payers pay in support of their monarchy? Apparently some people are enamored about such nonsense. How about what we as American shell out to maintain our bloated government, they don't waive, have parades, just take and grow bigger with the passing of each day.

The royal family do a lot of work for the poor, and disadvantaged kids in the UK.

However, since its not you paying for them... how about we mind our own fucking business? Since so few Americans seem to understand how their monarchy functions, it's best to stfu about it.

One thing that people forget.....
Love it.

1. You toss out a few stats from the Save the Children Fund and a link to their website. I'm guessing you missed that for the last 40 years the President of the Save the Children Fund, and one of their most important fundraisers has been....Princess Anne.

It's one thing that people forget.

2. The Civil List payment to the Queen is about £40m a year and is paid as a result of a deal between George III and the British Government about 250 years ago. In that deal, the Monarch gets a regular 'Civil List' payment, and in exchange the Government gets profits from the Crown Estates. All profits are paid to the Treasury.

For the year ending 2011, Crown Estate profits were £230.9 million. So, the net benefit of this arrangement to the UK taxpayer is nearly £200m. Without it, taxes in Britain would go up.

It's one thing that people forget.

This may be of interest to those who constantly harp on about how much the Royal Family "costs" British taxpayers.

Not sure I agree with the last paragraph. While technically true, a change in the arrangement could be argued to be unconstitutional and would be a PR disaster, not to mention having the effect of probably curtailing the advantageous tax position the Windsors enjoy.
