How Long Will America Lead the World?

Yep, I agree with you and Rico. The spirit part and the cycles part. Kudos to you both!

False hope from another government employee. I know I'm just a bitter loser, my profession plays into it too, fair's fair.

You're at a private school? Oh sorry. Really. I will paddle myself for being such a jerkwad. :whip:
Ok. Yes, private school.

Chin up folks. Don't forget that the American spirit is renewed with each generation. It is our freedom and flexibility as a society that gives cause for great confidence that our best days are yet to come. Our country has gone through these cycles in the past and come out on top. I'm not pearing at the future through rose colored glasses. There are always hard choices to be made. Other nations, such as China or India may well in the future boast economies the equal to or perhaps greater than out own. But remember it is OUR MODEL they are following. It is OUR MODEL that has and will eventually liberate their people from economic and political privation. I have a great belief in this nation. We will turn back the nihilistic hedonism and vapid belief systems of the left. The socialists will be defeated. Once the lefts notion of an all powerful, all controlling government has been vanquished the spirit of freedom and entrepreneurialism will be free to flourish again!!!!

I like your enthusiasm and positve outlook. I am not quite as optimistic about each generation renewing the American spirit, though, because I see the liberal indoctrination of our children in the schools up close and personal. The Education forum has many examples, so I won't start listing them here.

It is on my mind today because my daughter's English teacher had them watch Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine and then write an essay on it. I am sure that next year they will all be watching Al Gore's movie.

OMG. I can't believed they show that partisan trash in school.

I disagree with him that Americans are not 'scared' enough, take a look at all the discussions on outsourced jobs. Trust me, someone is working on the next new tech industry, which replaced 'service industry', which replaced manufacturing, which replaced agriculture, etc.

Gee...How about renewable and alternative energy resources? But that would undercut oil company profits, and we simply vcan't have that now...Can we?

Where there is a buck, there is a way...

Actually, new energy storage devices are the new hotness for verture capital.

If this is actually the real deal, the internal combustion engine is dead and buried, without government mandates. And besides EEStor, there's A123 systems, Firefly, Europositron, and a bunch of others I can't remember.

Anyway, to answer the question of the original thread: It depends on what you mean by "lead the world". If you're talking about policing the world, I think it's going to end as soon as other countries decide to dump their dollars and stop financing our debt. I think we may be in for some rough economic times pretty soon as the dollar continues to fall.

I very seldom agree with Fareed on anything--he always filters things too much through the liberal prism--but sometimes both he and Tom Friedman come up with very interesting topics that get your attention, no matter what your politics.
