The nation has a spending problem, we can not afford the war we pursue, so stop it and bring the troops home.
Our revenue stream is too small. Let the Bush Tax Cuts expire, put a very small transaction tax on stock and future's market's transactions, tax exports of refined gasoline (which will force a decrease in the cost of domestic gasoline), open up the ANWAR and charge royalties for every liter of crude oil that is removed from the ground - payable to the people of the United States of America, not the residents of Alaska. Tax imports! Place tax penalties on corporations, partnerships, and sole proprietorships that export jobs.
However there is more than just fixing the current problems of national finance. There must be an investment made in the future and there is no better investment to be made than in the education of our young. If you want to see a truly American Century, one in which the United States is the undisputed dominant world power for at least 100 years to come take this one simple step: Return the public education system to one of rigorous scholastic standards and make public education completely free from pre-school all the way to the PhD level for all citizens wishing to avail themselves of it. If we pay for schools instead of wars no power on earth can challenge us.
And what would it take? Political cooperation. But who would argue that if we spend too much we should spend less, if we take in too little we should take in more, and if we are too stupid to stand up to the rest of the world we should educate ourselves. Doesn't seem all that controversial to me. How hard could it be?
