Black Confederate Warriors of Dixie: How Did Black Southerners Respond When War Was Declared?

Wait....shouldn't they have been trying to escape north? To their savior Lincoln? Hmmmm

Given the fact that a couple thousand free blacks WERE slaveholders, it's not a surprise you can find occasional blacks that joined the confederacy.

But slaves would have never been given arms, until real desperation set in at the end.

Maybe you should read some real history, instead of stuff written by 'some guy'.
But they were given arms. So.

You mean the free blacks? Yes.

Whatever few incidents you may find are totally overwhelmed by the numbers who fled to Union lines after the Emancipation Proclamation was announced.
And you have proof of this as well? People naturally flee to who has the power to get in good with them.

Thousands and thousands of 'black Southern warriors did escape to the North- and joined the Union Army.

200,000 African Americans fought on the side of the Union.

On the side of the Confederacy? Hardly any.

Your blog citation is pretty hilarious

Why did blacks fight for the South? Because an enemy army was invading their country, raping women, burning and looting homes, and attacking the only life they knew.

Really? The Confederates attacked the American troops at Fort Sumter on April 12.

When were your 'Confederate blacks' supposedly enlisting because of the invading army, raping women' etc?

The largest demonstration came in New Orleans. A mass meeting attended by black residents was held just after the news arrived from Fort Sumter. They organized a regiment of black Confederate troops with black officers (New Orleans Picayune, 24 Nov 1861; Annual Cyclopedia, 1864, p. 202.)

No 'invasion' happened until July, 1861.

Did you even read your link?

was a Confederate Louisianan militia that consisted of free persons of color. Formed in 1861[2] in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was disbanded on April 25, 1862. Some of the unit's members joined the Union Army's 1st Louisiana Native Guard, which later became the 73rd Regiment Infantry of the United States Colored Troops.

Disbanded after less than a year and they joined the UNION Army.
Thank you for proving that liberals REALLY ARE this fucking dumb. They were CAPTURED you fucking twat. Since yankees were nothing but blood thirsty terrorists (see General Sherman for proof) I think I would have surrendered and joined them as well if I wanted to live. My god just kill yourself....your stupidity is depressing even to me.

The slaves were escaping the blood thirsty terrorist who owned them- and they fled North to escape their blood thirsty 'masters'.

Some like yourself still bemoan that the Confederate Slave States failed in their attempt to perpetuate human slavery forever.

The racist confederates banned blacks from participating in the army until they were on the brink of defeat. It is an absolute lie that any significant percentage of black people in the south fought for or supported the confederacy.
Were you alive then? I think historians would know more than you or I. :) Try reading among the first 5 comments on that article. Blacks were signing up for a black regiment with black officers the DAY it was announced. Oh and black regiments were started in the beginning and continued throughout the war. You can't rewrite history as much as you would like to. Its well documented just like the first slave owner in America was a black man. Again facts you can't deny or change.

What is well documented is that the Confederate Slave States seceded in order to protect their slave property.

And the actions of the loyal states against the rebel states resulted in the end of slavery.

All very well documented.

Don't know of many blacks who joined the Confederates; that's kind of a silly claim. As for why many didn't flee north, that was because they weren't allowed to, and most who tried were confined in 'property camps', where hundreds of thousands of them died, and in any case the Black Codes in most northern states would have made it impossible for them to make a legal living in the north anyway, particularly in Illinois, Lincoln's home state. Add to that the military governors of Union occupied southern states under martial law mostly prevented 'free' blacks from leaving their plantations without written permission from the plantation owners; Lincoln still wanted that cotton picked and the profits pouring into both his Party's pockets and his cronies' pockets, after all. The whole point of his illegal war was loot, after all, not 'freeing the slaves'.
