How badly did the debt fight damage America's image abroad? - The Week

"The United States has made a fool of itself," says Philip Bowring at The Jakarta Globe. This fiasco shined a glaring light on America's dysfunctional political system "to the point of seriously damaging the U.S. position in the world." Not only that, but by making bond investors jittery, Washington will drive up the cost of borrowing for everybody. Thanks a lot, America.

This ugly fight was like a "scary movie," says China's Global Times in an editorial, and the ending was nothing to cheer about. The 11th-hour agreement merely allowed a country mired in debt to borrow another $2.4 trillion. All that does is send the U.S. "sinking further into quicksand," and every country that holds U.S. debt will suffer if the bottom falls out of America's economy. Sadly, there's no longer any point in trying "to talk sense into the U.S."

Everyone's glad "the prospect of financial Armageddon appears to have been averted," says Britain's Independent in an editorial. But the debt ceiling — a "nonsensical legal cap" on Washington's ability to borrow money — is still in place. "And as long as a generation of Republican politicians feel entitled to hold a gun to the head of the credit of America to secure their political ends — disaster will never be far away.

The people who gave us this stupidity dont care about anyone but themselves.

They will merely ignore the rest of the world and or say they are idiots.

How dare the Republicans, who want to cut back on overspending, like the Majority of other Nations have done.
Look at the ones who haven't, Greece, Spain. Italy.
So who is the one's who don't care about our nation?
Dems don't want to cut back on hardly anything at all. They would rather have this county fall.

Dems want a sensible debt reduction plan that involves both increased revenue and spending cuts.

The US creating a debt crisis for no reason was humiliating

Jesus I thoiugh at least one of them would answer the thread though

Nice job giving people less than 15 minutes to respond to the post on a non real time discussion board. Do you get tired of using hack methods such as this to make yourself feel falsely superior to other people??

One must remember that the majority of the world uses a parlimentary system, where the party(ies) in power is "The Government" and anyone in an opposition party is basically restricted to bitching and moaning about how the party(ies) in power sucks.

Even in good times Europeans find our federal system confusing and inefficent. The concept of the minority being able to stop the majority, or even the executive and legislative powers being from 2 different parties is a foreign concept to them.

The one advantage our system does have is smoother transisitons when the party in power changes at any level. In a parlimentary system there is more of a wholesale change than in ours.

Not nearly as bad as the amount of debt we have. The fact nothing was done to fix that hurts our image worst of all.

If we had a world war emerge would we fight it?

Would we just sit back and watch and then deal with WHOEVER won?

Would we dig deep and come up with the money to fight it so we could make sure the right faction won?

If our country is truely in danger then WHY do you refuse to allow the taxes to be raised so we can pay off the debt?

What has a fictitious world war got to do with cutting back on an overbearing government.
Raising taxes is not the answer.
How much would an measly 35 billion more a year extra do?
Government must be cut back and the left refuse to accept it.
Never mind that it worked for the other countries who have done it.

To late to worry about our worldwide image. Bush II took care of that. The whole world knows we are idiots.

The real question is what has it done to job creation.
