CDZ How bad is the wait staff shortage where you are

I try to limit my eating out to high end restaurants. The food at a lot of “quick serve” places is not much better than I can cook at home. And when you go to a nicer place, they tend to be better staffed and better tasting.

As for the service staff; We have a local IHOP not far from the campus that we go to often. Its almost like passive resistance. The Cracker Barrel is much more user friendly in terms of wait staff. And if you ask them, they will take your ticket to the counter and cash you out at the one I frequent. My biggest complaint about them was the whole dog and pony show of having to stand in line to pay your ticket.

You spoke about only going to high class restaurants and then you talked about IHOP and Cracker Barrel, I wouldn’t consider either high class but to each his own.

Nice to see your taking an interest in my activities. I was commenting on the service (as per the title)...

Just curious that anyone would consider those two restaurants as high class.

Your meal doesn't arrive in a paper bag

Olive Garden has become my place of choice lately to be waited on in VA. Plenty of friendly, knowledgeable staff and they eliminated the whole wait for check, cash out and tip mess. They have really cool table top machines to pay from. And their new menu is really, really good.

Good question and I apologize for not being clear....

I have eaten at "lesser" restaurants before such as IHOP and Cracker Barrel. Because I have eaten there, when I do decide to go out to eat, I have decided to forego the "lesser" places for a meal that will usually be memorable and better. The OP was about poor service and the IHOP was one of the places that jumped to the front of my mind in terms of the bad service.

Mistaking good restaurants for high class and vice versa is common. The best breakfast places for quality food at a good price was generally a Piggly-Wiggley out in the sticks but no one would mistake it for high class. I haven't been in one for their breakfast bar since mom died in 2008.

We have a whole caravan of people heading this way that would be thrilled to take your order

Only if you speak Spanish

Yo quiero dos bifstek Palomilla y dos Arroz con pollo con frijoles negros y un Ropa Vieja y dos Paellas.

Zoinks! That would work for me. :tomato:

Some people think Red Lobster is a high-class restaurant.

I'd rather have a good Paella than anything Red Lobster serves.

Having just been to New Orleans, high end restaurants are just too high end for us. They might have a better wine selection or fancy drinks and the meats Might be of higher quality but the price is just too outrageous. Wait staff was professional and our guy worked us like a fine violin which was enjoyable but to go away $200 lighter more for atmosphere than anything is too rich for us. New Orleans is probably not the average place to rate wait staff but many places in the quarter have gay men who look very transient and sometimes very rough. Get into the warehouse district and you get more mainstream waiters, but you are in the heart of the convention and casino crowd.

I do agree with candy that management determines the quality of service. Management determines cleanliness, quality of food, atmosphere, and quality of experience. But restaurants are as individual as people and high end does not always mean great food. The south land is big on buffets and they run the gamut from horrible to great. The last Morrison’s is located in mobile Alabama and is a staple. Employees are southern friendly but not directly involved in table serving you. Chicfil
a is great because it is so consistent and every staff I have experienced is well trained. Texas Roadhouse sucks. Like teds, their staff is higher quality. Tallahassee is a college town so help is not as hard to find as other places but turnover has to be massive.

Having two small restaurants, good help is hard to find. We have gone so far as to get work release from the jail to college kids. You develop a culture and in a small town people know the deal. I would suggest that the majority of employees smoke pot, before and during work. Especially the kitchen help. I don’t see where the employee dilemma is much different now than it was a few years ago. We talked to a manager of Maddios, a midrange pizza franchise in tally and he had an employee database of 2000 people. That is so far beyond our abilities, but we asked him about a grill cook and he mentioned a couple names. A lot of people have issues, a lot of Latin are scared to respond to phone calls. One of our best employees is a Chinese girl who is graduating FSU two years early, has two jobs, and expects to work for an accounting firm in New York. Gems like her are few and far between, and of course she is very temporary. Good help is always and always has been hard to find.

No shortages here, of any kiind. There has never been a labor shortage in the U.S. in its entire history. Just because some idiot wants to be rich by Friday and needs 100 people to do it by then instead of having to wait for the Friday three weeks from this Friday is not a 'labor shortage', no matter what the gimps in the board rooms keep claiming. Your company not being able to lure some fool from say Ohio to work in your sweatshop in Los Angeles for peanuts is not a 'labor shortage' either. Not enough people willing to spend two years and $30,000 for that 'special skilll set' you need, but the industry only wants to pay $10 an hour for, and only needs for a few months before you toss them out the door, or just reaches the age of 35, a major criminal offense in Silly Con Valley, is not a 'labor shortage' nor a 'skill shortage'. If you can't locate your companies where your labor pool can afford to live, you don't have a 'labor shortage', you have some dickhead idiot looking back at you in the mirror every morning.
