Hey i'm really starting to like this Republican House of Representatives. It feels good to be proud of the Republican Party. It's been awhile...

Republican House members are preparing themselves to take a stand to save the incandescent light bulb.

Monday, the House of Representatives will vote on H.R. 2417, the Better Use of Light Bulbs (BULB) Act, a bill to repeal the federal ban on the incandescent light bulb, contained in a 2007 energy law.

Sponsored by Texas Republican Rep. Joe Barton, the bill would protect Americans’ ability to use the kind of light bulbs they want and not be forced to use mercury containing light sources such as compact fluorescent lights.

“This is about more than just energy consumption, it is about personal freedom. Voters sent us a message in November that it is time for politicians and activists in Washington to stop interfering in their lives and manipulating the free market,” Barton said. “The light bulb ban is the perfect symbol of that frustration. People don’t want Congress dictating what light fixtures they can use.”

Texas Republican Rep. Michael Burgess and Tennessee Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn joined Barton and 12 other Republicans to reintroduce the bill in early 2011.

“These are the kinds of regulations that make the American people roll their eyes,” said Blackburn. “It is typical of a ‘big Washington’ solution to a non-existent problem. In this case it manifests itself as an overreach into every American home, one that ships good jobs overseas and infuriates the American consumer.” (FEMA faces House heat for taking over flood insurance policies)

Come Monday, Americans may be one step closer to having absolute freedom in their light source choices.

“Traditional incandescent bulbs are cheap and reliable. Alternatives, including the most common replacement Compact Fluorescent Lights or CFL’s, are more expensive and health hazards – so why force them on the American people?” said Barton. “From the health insurance you’re allowed to have, to the car you can drive, to the light bulbs you can buy, Washington is making too many decisions that are better left to you and your family.”

With all the problems we face, the GOP is focused on light bulbs. Ain't that swell.

Joe "The Free Marketer" Barton shouldn't be using free market arguments, especially after he voted yes for the auto bailout, cash for clunkers, agricultural subsidies, banning internet gambling, among other things. Yet, this goon parades around and uses the free market for incandescent light bulbs.

This is just more GOP dumbass talking points.

I don't know Barton's voting record completely but i'll take your word on that. I can only speak for myself. I don't agree with his votes on those other issues but i do agree with him on this. Government Banning light bulbs and forcing Citizens to buy a particular light bulb just isn't right. It's a ridiculous Government over-reach. Let the People decide for themselves which light bulb they want to use. This should not be a Government issue at all.

The ban was probably one of the stupidest laws in human history; it was the Jar Jar Binks of laws

What other things "shouldn't" the government restrict your right to buy?

Kiddie porn?
LAWS Rockets?
Thermal Nuclear Devices?
Slaves?

Do tell..

I just find it odd that a man who voted for the Patriot Act, the REAL ID Act, and the creation of the TSA is fighting for our "freedoms".

waste of time, as usual.... it won't get pass the senate...they know it too...but yet they still spend useless time doing this kind of crap.... (not that i like those florescent bulbs or the light they give off....I just really do NOT like them)

where are the jobs bills?

this congress is turning out to be even more useless than the previous one imho and as facts are showing....

This type of politickin' has long ago been ID'd by the constituency. It's taken forever though to get the constituency to actually get the motivation to 'pitch a bitch' to their representatives about this fraudulent practice. A former ma & pa outfit that got boosted to national attention through the 'National Geographic' publication...

...is just another 'fraud in the making'!

Obviously Apples & some fruit no one's ever heard of. Equating all that with Government banning light bulbs is beyond stupidity.

this congress is turning out to be even more useless than the previous one imho and as facts are showing....

At $275,000 Per Job created,it would be wise to not offer anymore Government "Help" on Job-Creation. We just can't afford anymore of their "Help." Also, banning light bulbs in the first place was useless crap. This is the right thing to do and definitely not useless.

ok, then please tell me, in your own words, why you think this is the RIGHT thing to do? Please explain to me, so i can understand, why being the only country in the world, to be left using the incandescent light bulb, that truly does waste energy, a good thing?

the negatives that i can see with the florescent light bulb:

the light they cast is harsh and not soft enough on the stronger bulbs and they don't cast enough light on the lower watt bulbs.

and

when you break them, they have the poisonous Mercury in them and the clean up is a bitch...I broke one, right on the stove!

outside of those 2 things, on the positive... they do cut our energy use down as a nation, and are greener...

I am hoping that LED lights will be better....

Well don't buy them then. Buy whatever light bulb you want. I'm certainly not going to stop you. And the Government shouldn't either. These new bulbs they're forcing Citizens to buy are not all they're cracked up to be. There are problems with these new bulbs. But besides that, just let the People decide for themselves which light bulbs they want to use. I'm actually embarrassed that our Government would take the time to ban light bulbs. Talk about useless crap?

I support that. Some of these fancy bulbs are $10. piece. Question. Why do these assholes wait until the 12th hour to change it? After people stocked up on bulbs, after corporations shut down plants and laid workers off and re-tooled, etc.??:cuckoo:
