suspended by 3 threads, made of 3/16" aircraft cable and securely tied to much higher, strong branches. The trick is to hang an apple on a wire, centered on the sliding (one way device) loop of the snare, and about a foot above it. Deer stand on their hind legs all the time to reach food.

You can establish VERY high rates of success for this method, in advance, without ever putting out the snare, of course. Snaring deer is illegal, so doing this is a shtf, life or death survival thing.

What you do is bury a salt/mineral block in a likely spot for snaring, out of sight in the woods, of course. A few yds away, for a couple of weeks maintain a pile of sweetcorn, apples, carrots and the like. When you see signs that deer are using the "lick". you only need to occasionally renew the baits, as in once per month. Then, if you need deer jerky , lots of it, swiftly, you deploy the snare-cables

Carrots, in particular, last a long time and are very cheap. Apples do pretty well too, especially if refrigerated. So a very few lbs of food in your frig CAN translate into 100s of lbs of jerky, with knowledge and work.

Ditto caching homemade fish traps regular steel traps, netting for making box traps, also gill nets and trotlines. Cache just the makings of the traps and assemble them post shtf. This sort of stuff is very cheap, works for you in dozens of locations, 24-7. If you bait those areas,in normal times, the success rate when you set the traps, etc, will be much higher. Such methods can be serviced at night, with NVD goggles, which will make doing so much safer. Movement in daylight is likely to get you shot.

yep, it doesn't take much to pop a cow in the head, at night, with NVD goggles, silenced .22 rifle and luminous sights. :)
