Both numbers above are subject to which poll you read, but the percentage of self-proclaimed atheists consistently exceeds the number of self-proclaimed homosexuals.
We have a few admitted homosexuals in congress but we have no admitted atheists in our current congress (that I am aware of).
If one runs for a congressional office, they will certainly be asked their position on homosexuality but not their position on atheism, even though atheists are a larger portion of the population than homosexuals.
