Home schooled children outpacing public school students

I take some of my college classes over the internet....Why not for public school?

Child can do his/her class at their pace. ;)

It will never happen, because remember when you said you want to invest in education? That means Unions for teachers.... Do you really think unions will allow technology to replace failing teachers? Nope.

Why have a teacher teach 2,000 kids in a day, or great videos that teach tens of thousands in a year when instead you can have teachers collecting on tenure.

Smart parents are starting to realize just how bad the public schools really are:

Home schooled children outpacing public school students

Do you know there are 10 and 12- year-old students already attending college classes in America? It is happening every day as parents flee the public schools and instead educate their children at home.

All across the U.S. home schooled children continue to surpass children subjected to the dumbing-down process that is offered by public education. The results are by the time home schooled students are in the 8th grade, they are four years ahead of their public/private school counterparts.

Parents who are aware of Common Core curriculum (one size fits all) that was created by the Obama administration are leaving the public school system by the hundreds of thousands and if a charter school is not available are turning to home schooling.

The statistics about how far ahead home school children are may be ignored by some school boards however consciousness parents are becoming aware that their children are falling behind home schooled students. If these parents cannot force Common Core out of their schools, they are finding there are other ways to educate their children and home schooling is one of them.

Think about this for a minute; if all inner city parents home schooled their kids, do you think their kids would perform better or worse than they do currently?

Of course home schooled kids do better. The only kids who are home schooled are kids whose parents are zealots when it comes to their kids. First they can afford for one of the parents to stay home and school their kids. Secondly, they are pretty well to do and tend to be better educated, so they can actually home school their kids and do a good job at it. This is pretty much the same as telling us that kids who go to private schools perform better than kids who go to public schools. Of course that is also true for many of the same reasons. Also, private schools can turn away stupid kids who have a hard time learning; public schools can't turn those kids away.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with home schooling, but home schooling is not the reason home schooled kids do better.

Another ignorant rightist who doesn’t get it.

The issue isn’t the merits of ‘home schooling,’ the issue is that ‘home schooling’ is not an option for millions of working American families headed by a single parent or where both parents are compelled to work.

Now, if you want the government to replace the income of one parent so that parent can stay at home and ‘school’ his/her child(ren), fine, we’ll do away with public schools and have everyone ‘home school.’

Otherwise, the premise of your thread is pointless.

I think you miss the point. Why do parents feel compelled to home school? Because public schools do a piss poor job of educating kids. Parents who care have given up demanding an education and resort to educating their children themselves. They are responsible parents and do for theirs what government has failed to do. There are loads of parents who could give a shit what happens to their offspring and are perfectly happy being rid of the darlings while they are indoctrinated at the local public cesspit school. Even poor parents who cared could raise a fuss for better schools, but they don't. Why is that, do you think?

Among the many inherent shortcomings of the public school system is the "one size fits all" aspect of progress. Although we know that every child learns at her own pace, the entire class - maybe 35-40 kids - are forced to progress through the material at one time, at one pace. This means that those at the top are bored and those at the bottom are challenged, and the entire class is slowed down so that the teacher can accommodate as many students as possible.

Home schooling does not share this problem.

Coming completely out of left field, this learning paradigm is one of the reasons why American kids cannot compete in international soccer. In the U.S., kids almost exclusively compete in their own age group, while elsewhere, kids compete according to their skill level. Thus, the kids at the top of the heap are playing against much older kids and are developing as quickly as their physical maturity and skills allow. In the U.S., if you are the best 12 year old in the state, you are NEVER being challenged or developing fully, because you are surrounded by kids who are less talented.

Home schooling is better and more effective than the public schools??

Color me shocked. NOT.

The idea that schools are babysitters is at the heart of your argument. Is it impossible for children to learn in the evening?

It's time to admit that our education system is broken. The idea that children have to, by law, attend a school building based on the factory model in order to learn is absurd.

Why can't school systems provide tutors, walk-in computer labs, video conferencing?

It wouldn't be a bad idea to eliminate factory schools and replace them with an extended library system. If learning isn't voluntary, there's no sense in wasting time and money on education.

We force kids into factory schools and then wonder why they don't learn anything. That's insanity.

Life is not a race to see who gets out of the gate the fastest. If you want to homeschool your kid, homeschool him on college material. What do you do with a 16 year old who has finished college? Send him out into the workforce?

A 10 or 12 year old who has never been out of the house on his own is not socially prepared to attend classes with 18-19 year olds

You are proving that the #1 reason for success in education is engaged parents. Now....what do you plan to do about the 75% + parents who can't or won't educate, or even participate in the education of their own children?

Yes, that's exactly what you do. Send him or her out into the work force.

Oh, those vile 18-19 year olds - they are going to eat up the poor babies

I know the leftards are stupid, but the extent of stupidity revealing itself every day is astonishing :D

Nothing, nothing at all. People will educate themselves given the opportunity. It happens every day. Make schools voluntary.

Remember Dorothy Parker. You can take a whore to culture, but you can't make her think.

Did the privates start going to common core out there? They are here. So very few options left.

Is making school voluntary workable if you want to keep an educated voting citizenry? What do we do with those kids whose parents don't send their kids to school?
